Carlson Reaches 750-Win Plateau

Players of the Week: Including a four-point game in which he scored the overtime game-winner in the second game of the 2023 Frosty Cup, Cole Knuble (Fargo/USHL Forward of the Week) registered five points last week on three goals and two assists in two games played.

Nick Wallace (Madison/USHL Defenseman of the Week) had a goal and two assists and was +1 in a pair of games last week for the Capitols.

Jacob Fowler (Youngstown/USHL Goaltender of the Week) went 2-0-0 with a 1.50 GAA and .941 sv% in two games last week. The Boston College commit had 24 saves on 25 shots in a 4-1 win over league-leading Chicago last Friday This marks the fourth time Fowler has been named USHL Goaltender of the Week this year.

Taking a Stand: With a 9-1-0-0 record its last 10 games, Waterloo (23-12-0-0, 46 points) has pulled within five points of league-leading Fargo (24-8-0-3, 51 points) in the Western Conference.

Green Bay (21-11-1-1 44 points) owns a 7-3-0-0 mark in its last 10 games to rank second in the Eastern Conference. Chicago (22-12-2-1, 47 points) stands atop the Eastern Conference, three points ahead of Green Bay.

USHL College Commitments 2022-23: A total of 346 current USHL players have committed to play NCAA Division I college hockey. 50 schools are represented amongst the 346 commitments including 91 players headed to Hockey East teams, 85 players to the National Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHC), 77 players to Big 10 programs, 55 players to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC), 31 players to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), four players to independent programs and three players to Atlantic Hockey (AHA) teams. Net Fix: Youngstown netminder Jacob Fowler, a Boston College commit, leads the USHL with four shutouts, ranks fourth in the league with a .914 save percentage, stands fourth in saves with 614 and is fifth in goals against average with a 2.63 mark in 23 games played.

On a Roll: In the midst of a nine-game point-scoring streak during which he's registered 17 points on three goals and 14 assists, Cedar Rapids forward Ryan Walsh ranks third in league scoring with 13-31--44 in 33 games.

Threshold: Cedar Rapids head coach Mark Carlson has racked up 750 career wins behind the RoughRiders bench. Carlson, who began his tenure with Cedar Rapids in 1999-2000, ranks only behind P.K. O'Handley in terms of most coaching wins in the history of the United States Hockey League. O'Handley had 783 victories as the head coach for Waterloo and North Iowa.

With 335 career wins, Tri-City's Anthony Noreen ranks 10th on the USHL's list for career coaching victories. Noreen, who guided the Storm to the 2021-22 Anderson Cup, was last season's USHL Coach of the Year.

USHL NHL Alumni Spotlight: The only South Dakotan to ever play in the National Hockey League, forward Walker Duehr tallied his first career NHL goal in a 4-1 Calgary Flames road win over St. Louis Jan. 13. Duehr, a Sioux Falls native who played in the USHL with Chicago, Sioux City, Tri-City and Bloomington from 2014-17 prior to four seasons with Minnesota State of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, is in his second season with the Flames organization and has seen action in nine NHL games during which he's tallied 2-0--2.
