Auburn Doubledays News Release
Niles, OH - One week ago, it was the Auburn Doubledays getting blown out at home, committing six errors and having just three hits in a 9-1 loss to Hudson Valley. Friday night, the Doubledays were the team doing the blowing out in a 10-1 win at Mahoning Valley in front of 3,165 Scrappers fans.
Aided by seven Scrappers errors, the Doubledays scored ten runs on ten hits en route to a nine-run crushing of Mahoning Valley in a first-place showdown at Eastwood Field.
Entering play Friday night, Mahoning Valley (28-20) and Auburn (29-19) sat atop the New York-Penn League's Pinckey Division in a first-place tie. After Auburn's convincing win, the Doubledays now have a game lead over now second place Mahoning Valley.
For the second game in a row, the Doubledays put three runs on the board in the first inning. Taking advantage of two Mahoning Valley fielding errors, the Doubledays scored their first run on an RBI double by Justin Miller and plated runs two and three on a two RBI single by Carlos Alvarez.
The defense didn't get any better for Mahoning Valley in the second. For the fourth time this year, the Scrappers committed three errors in an inning, with their most recent occurrence in Friday night's second inning. Those three errors contributed to three more Auburn runs, and the Doubledays led 6-0 through two innings.
In the third, Auburn used two one out singles by Connor Rowe and Khayyan Norfork to put men in scoring position for Bryce Ortega, who followed by singling in two more runs, extending Auburn's lead to 8-0.
From there, Manny Rodriguez and the Doubledays pitching dominated, giving up just one run in the ballgame, scattering three hits. Rodriguez went five innings for his second win of the season while Kelvin Lopez and Alex Kreis worked the final four, giving up no hits and only allowing one baserunner, a walk in the sixth issued by Lopez.
Auburn ended up adding two more runs, one in the fifth and another in the eighth when Billy Burns tripled to rightfield and scored as the throw home went between the catcher Alex Lavisky's legs.
The win puts the Doubledays in sole possession of first place in the Pinckey Division of the New York-Penn League. Auburn will meet Mahoning Valley Saturday night for game two of the four game series, with the final two games of the set being played at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY. First pitch on Saturday night is scheduled for 7:05pm with the Doubledays pregame show airing at 6:50pm on 89.1 FM in Auburn, NY and at www.auburndoubledays.com. Fans are invited to tune into the play-by-play call of John Miller and cheer on the first-place Doubledays.
