Jamestown Jammers News Release
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - After the Jamestown Jammers took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, State College scored five runs in the bottom of the frame to stun Jamestown, 6-2, at Medlar Field Friday night.
The Spikes used four hits, a walk and an error to storm back in the eighth for the team's sixth win in the last seven games, while Jamestown fell for the second day in a row. The Jammers (26-22) are now three games behind Auburn for first place in the Pinckney Division.
Rand Smith had two hits in his return to Jamestown, and Pedro Mendoza stayed hot with two more singles.
In the third inning, Jamestown broke through with the game's first run. Jobduan Morales and Mendoza had back-to-back one-out singles before Ryan Goetz grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Morales from second when the ball got away from the first baseman.
That lead held up until the fifth inning when the Spikes strung together three straight singles to plate a run. Then, Alex Dickerson bounced into a double play to end the threat and keep the score tied.
Both teams had opportunities, but neither could break through until the top of the eighth inning.
With two outs, Brian McConkey walked, Rand Smith singled and Kentrell Dewitt walked to load up the bases. A wild pitch by Josh Poytress allowed McConkey to score from third. Morales also worked a walk to reload the bases, but Jamestown failed to score any more runs.
That would prove costly as State College struck for those five runs in bottom half of the frame.
A single, walk and bunt single loaded up the bases before Derek Trent tied the game with a line drive to center. Ashley Ponce had a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to plate the winning run before a fielding error, a Wes Freeman single and a bases-loaded walk broke the game open.
Jamestown did not threaten in the ninth as Emmanuel De Leon slammed the door. Poytress earned the win after recording just one out to improve to 3-2. Chase Wier took the loss for the Jammers after giving up all five runs in the eighth inning. The Jammers and Spikes will face off at 7:05 p.m. Saturday before returning to Jamestown for two more games starting Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
