Frederick Keys News Release
LYNCHBURG, Va. -Drew Dosch nearly became the second Keys player to hit for the cycle against the Lynchburg Hillcats in as many years, while the Frederick bullpen endured a late rally by the home team to earn a 6-4 win on Monday night at City Stadium. Going 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs, Dosch has now driven in 10 runs in his last four games. With the win, the Keys also become the first team in the CL to eight victories (8-4).
Holding a 2-1 leading through five innings, the Keys used a big sixth to help solidify their hold on the game. Jeff Kemp reached on a one-out infield single and Tucker Nathans followed suit one batter later. The Hillcats would make a pitching change, bringing in Justin Brantley to face Trey Mancini. Frederick's cleanup man would drive a long single to center which scored Kemp from second to bring up Brenden Webb. Grounding one sharply to first, Nellie Rodriguez threw out Mancini at second, but the toss by shortstop Ivan Castillo was wide of first and allowed Nathans to score. One batter later, Dosch completed the scoring with an RBI triple to center.
In the first four innings, Hillcats starter Michael Peoples did not allow a hit, but things changed almost immediately in the fifth. Webb extended his hitting streak to seven with a single to right, to send up Dosch who connected on his first Carolina League home run. The deep fly would give the Keys a lead it would not relinquish.
Staying red-hot on Monday night, Dosch is hitting .500 (9-for-18) on the roadtrip with a home run, a triple, three doubles, 10 RBIs and three runs scored. Over that stretch, he has seen his batting average climb from .143 to .283, while he paces the Carolina League with 14 RBIs.
Lynchburg added a run in the home-sixth on an RBI single by Alex Monsalve, before pulling within a run in the seventh. Luigi Rodriguez singled to lead off the inning, stole second and moved to third on a fielder's choice. Keys reliever Devin Jones then jumped ahead of Clint Frazier 1-2, but the Hillcats leadoff man doubled off the right field wall to score Rodriguez. Paul Hendrix followed with a two-bagger to make it 5-4.
From there, the Hillcats bats would go quiet, recording only one hit in the last two innings. After a single by Nellie Rodriguez to open the eighth, Mike Papi laid down a poor sacrifice, which allowed Austin Wynns to throw out Rodriguez at second. Cody Wheeler then induced a 6-4-3 double play before retiring the side in the ninth.
Keys starter Mitch Horacek (2-1) earned his second straight win, going 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits and tied his season-high with eight strikeouts. Wheeler earned his first save, working two innings and allowing one hit. Peoples (0-1) suffered the loss giving up four runs on four hits over 5.1 innings.
The Keys and Hillcats play the middle game of three on Tuesday night. Right-hander David Hess (1-0, 1.80) makes the start for Frederick and will be opposed by Lynchburg righty Adam Plutko (0-1, 1.42). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. Pregame coverage begins at 6:15. Frederick returns home on Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m. when the team hosts the Wilmington Blue Rocks. For ticket information, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
