Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs took sole possession of second-place in the North Division and tied a season-high winning streak by defeating the Manitoba Moose 3-0 on Saturday night at Copps Coliseum. Jaroslav Halak's league-leading sixth shutout led the 'Dogs to their fourth-straight victory and improved Hamilton's record to 27-18-1-1. The Bulldogs pulled two points ahead of the Moose and have a game in hand after both teams entered the contest tied with 54 points.
For the second time in as many nights, Hamilton opened the scoring on the power play. Andre Benoit's sixth goal of the season put the 'Dogs up 1-0 with 4:03 left in the opening period. Benoit buried a shot over Moose goaltender Julien Ellis' shoulder after taking a feed from Mikhail Grabovski. Andrei Kostitsyn also earned an assist on the goal.
Kostitsyn extended Hamilton's lead to 2-0 when he cut in alone from the right side of the net and slid the puck just inside the left post past an outstretched Ellis at 7:41 of the middle stanza. Matt D'Agostini hit Kostitsyn in stride with a pass from the right boards to earn one of the helpers, while Mathieu Biron earned the other on Kostitsyn's 14th of the campaign.
The Bulldogs rounded out the scoring at 3-0 when Matt D'Agostini deposited a rebound into an open net at 4:50 of the final frame. Danny Groulx and Grabovski earned helpers on D'Agostini's ninth goal of the season.
Halak stopped all of the 30 shots he faced for the Bulldogs, picking up his 13th win of the season and setting a franchise record for shutouts in a single season. At the other end of the ice, Ellis stopped 36 of the 39 shots he faced in a losing effort for the Moose.
Hamilton went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Manitoba was 0-for-3 with the extra-man.
The Bulldogs return to action at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, February 2nd when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Phantoms at the Wachovia Spectrum. Fans can listen to the game on the flagship station of the Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Network, 820 CHAM "The Legend," beginning with the Park's Furniture Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m. Fans can also listen or watch at www.hamiltonbulldogs.com by clicking on the 'B2 Networks' or '820 CHAM' icon on the 'Dogs website.
