Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds couldn't find enough firepower on offense, falling to the Charleston RiverDogs 4-3 on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Daniel Ramos (7-2) earned the win with a strong relief effort for the RiverDogs (22-28, 55-63), scattering three hits over four scoreless innings while walking two and striking six. Brandon Bonilla (0-2) took the loss for the Shorebirds (24-26, 59-58), allowing two runs on one hits over two innings, walking two and fanning four. Carlos Espinal worked around a pair of two-out singles to notch his third save in the ninth.
Charleston found their footing early. Carlos Vidal worked a one-out walk in the top of the first, then two batters later Dermis Garcia belted a two-run home run to deep left, his 13th of the season, giving the RiverDogs an instant 2-0 lead.
David Metzgar went yard with a solo home run to lead off the third, and Vidal kept the offense rolling with a double to follow. Dermis Garcia slashed a double two batters later to bring Vidal in again and make it 4-0. The RiverDogs had another chance later in the inning as Wilkerman Garcia rolled a single into right, but Zach Jarrett unloaded to throw Dermis Garcia out at the plate and end the inning.
The Shorebirds countered in the home half of the third thanks to a glove miscue. Cadyn Grenier lead off with a single, then Jean Carrillo hit a screamer back to the mound. Charleston starter Miguel Yajure knocked it down and had Grenier easily at second but airmailed the throw into center, allowing Grenier to take third. Kirvin Moesquit followed with a sac fly to left to bring in Grenier and make it 4-1. Mason McCoy came up next and singled, then after a strikeout, Zach Jarrett and Seamus Curran strung together back-to-back RBI singles, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
The scoring grinded to a halt after that. Ryan Wilson and Max Knutson combined for seven strong relief innings for Delmarva, while Yajure made his exit after the fourth before handing it off to Ramos. Yajure finished with no-decision, allowing three unearned runs on five hits in four frames.
Delmarva's best chances to tie the game came in the sixth and ninth innings. In the sixth, Ryan Ripken worked a one-out walk, and Grenier slashed a double down the left field line and into the corner. Ripken ran through a stop sign at third, though, and was thrown out at the plate by a considerable margin. Carrillo then struck out to end the threat.
Moesquit and McCoy notched back-to-back two-out singles in the bottom of the ninth, but Trevor Craport hit a chopper to short, and the RiverDogs walked away with the series-opening win.
McCoy finished 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Jarrett had two hits and an RBI. Grenier went 2-for-4 with a double and run, his first multi-hit game since the opener of a July 22 doubleheader against Greensboro.
Dermis Garcia powered much of the RiverDog offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, homer, and three RBIs.
The Shorebirds look to get back in the series against the RiverDogs on Thursday night. Luis Perez (3-2, 2.81) takes the hill for Delmarva against Charleston's Janson Junk (5-4, 3.98). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. In conjunction with Maryland Pride Thursday, the first 500 fans through the Perdue Stadium gates will receive a Shorebirds Maryland Pride hat, presented by Spicer Bros. Construction, Inc. It's also Kiss 95.9 Thirsty Thursday presented by University Village of Salisbury. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
