Charleston RiverDogs News Release
SALISBURY, Md. - First baseman Dermis Garcia and third baseman David Metzgar each homered to lift the RiverDogs to an early 4-0 lead and Daniel Ramos helped Charleston hang on with four scoreless innings of relief as the RiverDogs topped Delmarva, 4-3, in Wednesday evening's road trip opener from Perdue Stadium.
Garcia's first inning home run was a two-out, two-run shot that extended the Dominican Republic prospect's team-leading total to 13 on the season. The 20-year-old now has nine since the beginning of July and is four short of his career-best total in 2017 with less than three weeks remaining in the season. Garcia finished with a three RBI night after driving in another with a one-out double in the third, tying a career-best.
Metzgar touched off for his first home run with the RiverDogs (55-63, 22-28), the second of his professional career, to lead off the third.
After a 4-0 lead was built over the first two and a half frames, Delmarva (59-58, 21-29) got to Charleston's starter Miguel Yajure in the bottom half of the inning. Oregon State product and first-rounder Cadyn Grenier singled to start the rally. Catcher Jean Carrillo smoked a liner back to the mound before Yajure threw it away into center field, putting what may have been a double play ball into runners at the corners and nobody out. Kirvin Moesquit delivered with a sac fly and back-to-back two out knocks by Zach Jarrett and Seamus Curran cut the lead to 4-3.
RiverDogs relievers shut down the O's farm club the rest of the way. Daniel Ramos (7-2) scattered three hits and struck out six over four shutout innings. Carlos Espinal allowed a pair of two-out singles but left both stranded to garner his third save in five outings with Charleston. Save one blow up outing, Ramos has allowed just three runs (two earned) over the course of 11 outings, spanning over 25 innings.
Charleston's win marked their league-leading 51st one-run game of the season, improving the Dogs to 21-30 in such contests.
Upcoming
The RiverDogs continue their weeklong road trip on Thursday night with a 7:05 first pitch from Perdue Stadium. Charleston is scheduled to send right-hander Janson Junk (5-4, 3.98) to the mound. The Shorebirds will counter with righty Luis Perez (3-2, 2.81), who dealt 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball against the RiverDogs two starts ago. Thursday's contest can be tuned into on "The Big Talker" WTMA 1250 AM in the tri-county area and with online streaming audio via the RiverDogs' TuneIn radio station.
RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are available for the remainder of the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com.
