Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Fueled by a six-run bottom of the second, the Greenville Drive got Wednesday night's game off to a roaring start, and they held off a late comeback attempt by the Greensboro Grasshoppers in a 9-6 win in front of 5,026 fans.
The Drive (29-23, 54-67) offense collected six hits in the inning and took advantage of three Grasshoppers (21-27, 55-62) errors in the frame as well. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Everlouis Lozada got his big night started with an RBI single to score Pedro Castellanos, who collected two hits in the inning.
Samuel Miranda reached on an error later in the frame that brought two runs home, and RBI hits from Jarren Duran and Marino Campana plus another Greensboro error staked the Drive to a 6-0 lead against Sean Guenther (2-3).
The run support was plenty for Angel Padron (5-5), who held the Grasshoppers scoreless over six innings in his best outing of the season. The southpaw allowed just one hit and struck out five.
After two-out singles by Lozada and Miranda in the fifth, a wild pitch extended the Drive lead to 7-0.
The Grasshoppers broke through for four runs in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer from Will Allen. Kervin Suarez answered in the bottom half by singling home a pair of Drive runners to push the lead back to 9-4.
Jhonny Santos hit a two-run homer in the ninth for Greensboro's final runs of the night.
Lozada was a perfect 3-3 at the plate on Wednesday, and he was joined with three-hit nights by Campana and Castellanos.
Game two of the three-game series begins at 7:05 on Thursday night at Fluor Field. Left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus (6-4, 3.45) starts on the mound for the Drive, and the Grasshoppers will counter with right-hander Edward Cabrera (4-7, 4.16).
