Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, OH- Akron Aeros starter Kevin Dixon tossed eight shutout frames and combined with closer Randy Newsome on a three-hit shutout of the Altoona Curve, 3-0, Tuesday evening at Canal Park in downtown Akron, Ohio.
The Curve's only three hits in the contest came on singles by Brad Corley, Jason Delaney and Victor Alvarez.
Pittsburgh Pirates' shortstop Jack Wilson, who joined Altoona on Tuesday to continue his week-long minor league rehab assignment, went hitless in three at-bats, but did reach base on an error in his second at-bat of the game in the fourth inning. Wilson, who has been on the Pirates' Disabled List since April 6 with a strained calf muscle, played seven innings in the field, as expected, and made several fine defensive plays. He is expected to remain with the Curve for the final two games of the series in Akron before being re-evaluated on Friday.
Dixon (2-3) gave up only two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six to earn his second win of the season. The right-hander finished his night by retiring 13 consecutive Curve batters. Newsome kept his perfect string of converted save opportunities in tact by working a scoreless ninth inning to record his 12th save.
Altoona starter Jimmy Barthmaier was chased from the game in the first inning after giving up a pair of runs on two hits. The right-hander was pulled from the game after Akron had already grabbed a 2-0 lead and were threatening to extend their advantage by loading the bases. Josh Shortslef entered the game after Barthmaier exited and was able to strand the bases loaded to minimize the damage.
Barthmaier (2-3) walked three batters and did not record a strikeout in dropping his third straight start -- all against Akron.
The Aeros scored their two runs in the first on Wes Hodges' two-run double. The Akron third baseman now leads the Eastern League with 37 RBI's. Against Shortslef in the third, Stephen Head singled home Hodges to give Akron a 3-0 lead.
The Curve will continue their series against the Aeros Wednesday evening at Canal Park in Akron. Altoona will send right-hander Yoslan Herrera (3-3, 2.57) to the mound against Aeros' left-hander and reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week David Huff (3-1, 2.14). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Fans can hear all the action on flagship radio station Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network starting at 6:50 with the Curve Gameday Show.
