Biloxi Shuckers News Release
MOBILE, AL - Playing in extra innings for the second time in three nights, the Biloxi Shuckers (9-5) fell 2-1 to the Mobile BayBears (7-6) on Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Shuckers have now lost three straight games.
Biloxi held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning. RHP Nate Griep (BS, 1) came out to try and finish off the five-out save, but allowed a walk and back-to-back singles that tied the game. Griep struck out the next batter and induced a fly out, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the tenth, the Shuckers started with Tyler Heineman on second base, and the Shuckers catcher moved to third on a wild pitch by BayBears reliever Jeremy Rhoads (W, 1-0). However, the next three batters for Biloxi were unable to bring the runner home, as they struck out looking, flied out in foul territory and struck out swinging.
The BayBears put the game away in the bottom of the tenth in the first at bat. Brennon Lund, who started the inning at second, moved to third on a wild pitch from Brad Kuntz (L, 0-2) and came in to score when Matt Thaiss singled just inside the first base bag.
For the fourth time in the series, the Shuckers took the early lead. Nick Franklin led off the top of the second with a single and moved to second on a walk by Jake Gatewood. After a lineout by Blake Allemand, Jake Hager singled up the middle, driving in Franklin to give the Shuckers a 1-0 edge.
The Shuckers used a pair of excellent defensive plays by catcher Tyler Heineman to eliminate scoring threats from the BayBears. In the bottom of the third, Heineman gunned down Bo Way on a delayed steal of third, leading Lucas Erceg to the bag with his throw. Erceg returned the favor in the bottom of the eighth, when the third baseman fielded a ground ball and fired home, cutting down Way again as he tried to score from third.
Starter Adrian Houser didn't factor into the decision but tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in his second start for Biloxi, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three. Kodi Medeiros hurled 5.0 innings of relief, surrendering just one hit and four walks while striking out four.
The series concludes on Friday night at 6:35 pm. The Shuckers are scheduled to send RHP Thomas Jankins (2-0, 2.08) to the mound, while the BayBears are slated to start RHP Luis Pena (0-1, 4.32). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM 1240 AM/ FM 100.9, the MiLB First Pitch or TuneIn Radio.
