Devin's Overtime Goal Sends Rays Past Orlando

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Already well known for his overtime heroics in big games, South Carolina Stingrays' (37-28-3-1) captain Joe Devin added another notch to his belt Sunday afternoon, once again scoring in the extra period to give his team a 3-2 defeat of the Orlando Solar Bears (35-24-7-3) at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Devin finished with a goal and an assist in the victory for South Carolina, while forward Kevin Dufour also had a multi-point afternoon with a goal and an assist of his own.

By securing two points from Sunday's game, the Stingrays are now alone in fourth place in the ECHL's South Division with 78 points. South Carolina sits two points behind Orlando for third and one in front of Cincinnati who is on the outside looking in.

For the second straight game, Mason Marchment got the scoring started for the Solar Bears by putting a wrist shot past Stingrays' netminder Parker Milner at 2:27 of the opening period to give Orlando a 1-0 edge.

South Carolina evened things up when Dufour scored his second in as many games at 7:49 of the first frame off a deflection of an initial shot by defenseman Max Nicastro. Kelly Zajac was also credited with a second assist on the goal that tied the score at 1-1.

Despite a 16-8 edge in shots on goal for the Stingrays in the middle frame, neither team was able to find the back of the net and the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 to start the third.

Marcus Perrier gave South Carolina a 2-1 lead at 2:33 of the final period, scoring his eighth goal of the season on a rush down the left wing with assists from Devin and Dufour.

Perrier's tally held up until the final minutes when the Solar Bears evened things up at 2-2 on Marchment's second goal of the game at 16:45.

After Milner and the Rays successfully fended off multiple early chances from Orlando in the first part of the overtime, Devin knocked home the winner at the side of the net off a pass from Steven McParland. Cody Corbett also picked up an assist on the goal, which was scored at 2:57 of overtime.

Milner finished the contest with 37 saves to earn the victory, while Mitch Gillam stopped 36 shots in his professional debut for Orlando. The shots on goal between the teams was even at 39-39, making it the second consecutive game between the division foes to have an even shots-on-net count.

Neither team was able to strike on the power play as Orlando was held to 0-for-3 and South Carolina finished 0-for-1 with their only man-advantage opportunity coming in the first period.

The Stingrays have three games remaining in the final week of the ECHL's regular season, starting on Wednesday night on the road vs. the Atlanta Gladiators. South Carolina returns home to face Atlanta on Friday before squaring off with Cincinnati on Saturday. Both remaining home games begin at 7:05 p.m.
