Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (January 20, 2008) - A night after scoring two goals and watching his fellow assistant captains combine for nine points, Stephen Wood gave an all-out effort of his own, scoring a goal and two assists. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the Devils, who found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-4 score against the Johnstown Chiefs.
Wood's tally came 43 seconds into the second period, the fastest any Devil has scored into a frame this season. Jim Henkel and Eric Castonguay began the play in the Johnstown far corner, passing the puck through traffic to Wood at the top point. Rifling a shot into the net, the fourth-year pro earned his 11th goal of the season.
The Devils scored first on a goal from Colin Pepperall with seven minutes elapsed in the game. Set up by Ryan Gunderson on the power play, Wood fired a shot in from the high slot which was deflected into the bottom left corner of the net by Pepperall. The goal gave Pepperall his sixth point in two games.
Trenton also saw contributions from Jay Pemberton and Jason Bonsignore. Both tallies were wristers from wide-angles, but Pemberton notched his off a rebound from Jim Henkel while Bonsignore scored from a feed by Trevor Kell on the power play.
Randy Rowe spelt doom for the Devils, netting a natural hat trick to put Johnstown ahead three different times. Foiling both Trenton netminders, Rowe combined with Rob Drummond and Nicolas Bachand for the first five Johnstown goals.
After a scoreless 19 minutes in the third period, Mike Sgroi potted an empty netter to put the game away.
Jason Smith started the game, but after allowing three goals in the second was replaced by Dave Caruso, who made 16 saves on 18 shots. Caruso was tagged with the loss. Andrew Penner made several key saves for the win, but was helped by the barrage of goals from his skaters.
The Trenton Devils continue their homestand by hosting the Elmira Jackals at Sovereign Bank Arena Friday, January 25 at 7:30pm. Tune into WBCB 1490 or go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
