January 20, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
The Salmon Kings faced off against the Falcons for the second game of three set at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre tonight. Last night's game was a closely matched contest with the Kings winning 6-5 in the shootout against.
The first goal was scored less than two minutes into the first by Ryan Wade, his sixth of the season. It was a shorthanded goal as Wade blasted it from the top of the right circle past Falcons' goaltender Kris Mayotte, as the assist went to Gary Gladue. At the 8:25 mark the Kings nabbed another goal, this time just as a five-on-three power play expired. Wes Goldie snapped a rocket over the left shoulder of Mayotte. The assists went to Jordan Krestanovich and Ryan Wade. Billy Thompson made a series of impressive saves against the evenly paired Falcons to keep the score 2-0 Kings after the first period.
A number of penalties were doled throughout the duration of the second as both teams were playing with an edge. At 15:52 the Falcons got on the board with a shorthanded goal courtesy of Matt Quinn. At the end of the second the score was 2-1 Victoria, and the shots were even with both teams collecting 20 shots on net each.
At the beginning of the third the Kings suffered two penalties leaving them shorthand five-on-three. Billy Thompson failed to stop a quick shot from Tyler Kindle in front of the net, allowing the Falcons to lift the score to 2-2. The third period was intense as the Falcons poured on the pressure outshooting the Kings 21-7 in the frame, but Billy Thompson held Fresno at bay and the game went into overtime for the second straight night.
Off the opening faceoff Wes Goldie took a high stick to the face resulting in a four minute penalty to Fresno's Daryl Marcoux. The power play was short lived as Gary Gladue hauled down Kenny Bernard on a shorthanded breakaway seconds later. The teams played conservatively during the 3-on-3 play, and the Kings returned to the power play at its duration. Again Bernard would get away on a shorthanded breakaway and this time he was able to beat Thompson for the 3-2 Falcons victory. Shots on net were 30 for Victoria and 43 for Fresno. Fresno was 0/8=0% with the man advantage and the Kings were 1/7=14.3%. The last match of the three game set takes place at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
