Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Johnstown Chiefs opened the second half of the 2007-08 season with a wild 6-4 win over the Trenton Devils on Sunday afternoon.
The first period set the tone for a very eventful game between the Chiefs and Devils. Colin Pepperall scored his sixth of the season to give Trenton a 1-0 lead at 7:04 of the first. He was able to tip a point shot by Stephen Wood by Andrew Penner with Trenton on the power play.
Rob Drummond fired back with a power play goal for Johnstown just 1:13 later.
Randy Rowe then gave Johnstown a 2-1 lead when he tipped in a Ryan Garlock rebound. Jason Smith made the initial save for Trenton, but with the puck rolling between his skates, Rowe gave it an extra push across the goal line. Trenton answered just 20 seconds later when Jay Pemberton put in a rebound off of a shot by Wood.
At the 18:13 mark of the first, though, Rowe was able to score off of a furious scramble in front of the Trenton net. Nic Bachand and Andrew Martens were each turned away from point-blank range, but the final rebound found Rowe on the left wing.
It wouldn't take long for the action to pick up in the second period as Stephen Wood picked up his third point when he beat Penner with a one-timer from the point.
Rowe would untie the game, though, when he laced a spinning wrist shot past David Caruso, who replaced starter Jason Smith, for Johnstown's fourth goal. The goal completed Rowe's hat trick, his first of the year.
Nic Bachand got himself on the score sheet when he slid a shot along the ice by Caruso as well. Codey Burki added the assist on Bachand's second goal of the year.
Trenton wasn't finished, though, as Jason Bonsignore scored his first of the year at 18:20 of the second with Trenton on the power play.
The third period was more tame in terms of goals scored as Mike Sgroi's empty-netter at 19:38 was the only marker. There were some tense moments, though, as Johnstown had to kill four different 5-on-4 advantages for Trenton.
Andrew Penner won his first appearance in 13 games for Johnstown making 35 saves, while Johnstown's power play went 2-for-5.
The Chiefs' next home game is on Saturday January, 26 against the Dayton Bombers. That night the Chiefs will present a paper air plane toss night sponsored by Toyota. The lucky fan who throws a paper airplane through a Toyota vehicle's open sunroof will win the car! If you miss that one, you can catch the Chiefs on January 27 against the Reading Royals for the first-ever Chiefs' "Pink in the Rink" night.
