Trenton Devils News Release
Trenton, NJ - Despite a four-goal effort from Dan Charleston and erasing 1-0, 2-1, 5-3 and 6-5 deficits, the Devils lost to the Toledo Walleye, 7-6, in overtime in front of 4,686 fans Saturday at Sun National Bank Center. Tyler Doig scored on a power play 3:25 into the extra period to lead the Walleye to their first victory over the Devils in three meetings this season. Breaking a three-game losing streak, Toledo moves past the Devils in the standings, 14-18-2-1 and 31 points, while Trenton falls to 13-18-1-3 and 30 points, winless in six.
Saturday night's affair which featured 13 goals and 134 penalty minutes started with Sal Peralta making the score 1-0 Toledo 7:02 into the first period. Dan Charleston tied the game with the first of his four goals on the evening on a feed in front from Darcy Zajac 33 seconds into the second period, the first of three helpers for Zajac.
The score remained 1-1 until Randy Rowe scored past Shane Connelly at 10:25 of the second, but Charleston's second tally 6:11 later, banking it home from beneath the goal line, pulled the teams into a 2-2 heat. Jeff Prough registered his third point in the last two games by earning the helper on Charleston's second goal; Ryan Ginand notched his first of two assists on the play.
Toledo scored two more times in the final 3:34 of the second period, taking a 4-2 lead, with Zack Torquato and Christopher DiDomenico scoring within a span of 1:35. DiDomenico's goal was the first of his pro career.
Entering the night with a record of 2-11-0-1 when trailing after two periods, Trenton looked to be in trouble after falling behind by two goals. But after Matt Lombardi and Josh Boyd traded scores early in the third period, Dan Charleston ignited another comeback, scoring at 11:21 to achieve his first professional hat trick.
Three minutes later, a line brawl broke out, with the feature bout pinning Trenton's Myles Stoesz against Toledo's Dominic Osman, which was won decidedly by Stoesz. When the dust cleared, 13 infractions were assessed to seven different parties, totaling 80 totaling penalty minutes and four game misconducts. The Devils came out of the madness with a power play, which became a 5-on-3 when Charleston drew a tripping call. He cashed in with his fourth score to tie the game, 5-5, sending the season-high crowd into a frenzy.
The Devils finished the contest going 2-for-8 on the man advantage, but suffered a shorthanded goal seconds after tying the score, 5-5. Following a semi-breakaway, Tyler Doig made the score 6-5 Walleye, tipping a loose puck off Shane Connelly's glove and into the net. But two minute later, Matt Lombardi took another turn providing the heroics, firing a rocket past the glove of Joe Palmer with 2:19 left in regulation for Trenton's fourth goal of the third period to retie the score, 6-6.
Several of the Devils' 18 third period shots came in the final moments, but they never managed to take a lead. A penalty called against Toledo in the final 30 seconds of regulation carried into overtime, along with the blazing attack from the Devils. Trenton hit two posts during its overtime power play, but as the PP was about to expire 1:18 into overtime, Lombardi was flagged for tripping. Toledo had its first extra man chance since the second period, a four-on-three power play, and Simon Danis-Pepin took a feed from Jason Lepine and fired a shot off the iron, but Tyler Doig followed up on the rebound and buried the overtime winner.
In the offense-laden duel, Joe Palmer took the win in goal for Toledo, stopping 42 of Trenton's 48 shots. Shane Connelly took the loss, making 31 saves. The Devils attempt to snap their six-game winless streak Monday in Reading, PA in a 1:05 p.m. contest with the Royals.
