BINGHAMTON, NY - Nick Lappin scored three goals and added an assist as the Binghamton Devils routed the visiting Utica Comets in a penalty-filled game on Sunday night, 7-2, in front of 3,585 at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Devils took the lead 4:26 into the game as Jan Mandat set up Blake Pietila for his ninth goal of the year. Mandat sent a hard pass to the left wing circle and Pietila snapped a quick shot by the blocker of goaltender Richard Bachman for the 1-0 lead just 4:36 into the game. Assists on Pietila's goal were credited to Mandat and Steven Santini.

The Comets answered back 10:30 into the game as Andrew Cherniwchan beat Eddie Lack on a breakaway to tie the game at one. The goal was Cherniwchan's fourth of the year from Adam Comrie and Zac Lynch.

The game was tied for only 0:53 as Ben Thomson put Binghamton back up by one with an unassisted goal. Thomson moved down the right wing side around defenseman Ashton Sautner and cut through the crease beating Bachman over the blocker for the 2-1 lead with his fifth of the year at 11:23. The Devils took a 2-1 lead into the second period along with an 18-9 shot advantage.

Nick Lappin added to the lead early in the second period with his team-leading 21st of the year. From the left wing circle, Lappin snapped a shot over the left shoulder of Bachman through traffic for a 4-1 lead just 1:29 into the second with assists from Kevin Rooney and Yaroslav Dyblenko.

Pietila struck again to give the Devils a 4-1 lead on the power play and force a goaltending change for the Comets. Jake Walman hit Blake Speers with a pass below the goal line who sent a no-look backhander to Pietila in the right circle. Pietila lifted the puck over the left shoulder of Bachman for the three-goal advantage at 10:59. Following the goal, Thatcher Demko came in to replace Bachman.

Reid Boucher scored a big shorthanded goal late in the second period to split the Devils' lead in half. After an offensive zone faceoff, Boucher immediately sent a shot off the left post and in for his team-leading 25th of the year with 2:27 left in the frame. The goal was helped by Michael Chaput winning the faceoff and the Devils took a 4-2 lead into the third period along with a 30-17 shot advantage.

Lappin added two more goals in the third period for a hat trick and a 6-2 lead. Lappin's second of the night and 22nd of the year came just 2:47 into the final period and his third of the night and 23rd of the year came shortly after, at 6:06. Rooney assisted Lappin's hat-trick goal and then helped Brian Strait tally his third of the year at 10:28 to finish the scoring in a 7-2 win.

Lack stopped 24 of 26 for the win while Bachman stopped 25 in the loss before being replaced by Demko.
