Devils Can't End Norfolk's Streak

March 23, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - The Albany Devils bid to end the Norfolk Admirals historical winning streak was one goal short. The Devils lost, 2-1, Friday at the Norfolk Scope Arena. Albany joins a group of teams that have failed to defeat Norfolk in the last 19 games - the longest stretch in AHL history.

The Devils were only inches and even seconds away from earning their second straight win. Stephen Gionta and Tim Sestito both struck iron within the first two minutes and 30 seconds of the game. In the second, a quick whistle nullified a Devils try which made its way over the goal line, but just after the play was blown dead.

Eric Gelinas did have one count, netting his league-leading 15th goal of the season as a defenseman. He registered his team-high eighth power-play goal when he was setup by Mattias Tedenby at 14:14 of the first period.

Only 18 seconds later, Norfolk's Jean-Philippe Cote moved the game to square one with a tally at 14:32.

The game-winning goal came off the stick of Tyler Johnson on a rebound play at 12:08 of the second period.

Goaltender Jeff Frazee was challenged with scrabbles and odd-man rushes. He made 26 saves on 28 shots. At the other end, Jaroslav Janus extended his personal winning streak to 11 games with 26 stops on 27 tries.

The Devils will get a rematch Saturday at 7:15 p.m. The game can be followed on ahlive.com.
