LOWELL, Mass. - Dan McGillis' power-play goal at 1:47 of overtime provided the difference as the Lowell Devils (37-28-5-6) defeated the Provi! dence Bruins (41-30-2-4) on Saturday night at Tsongas Are! na. With the win, the Devils gained one point on the Bruins in the playoff race.
The Devils came out firing from the opening face-off, putting 17 first-period shots on Providence G Hannu Toivonen, and scoring the only goal of the opening frame. Rod Pelley sent the home team to the locker room with a 1-0 lead with his 15th goal of the season at 14:13.
Both teams lit the lamp in the second period, with Providence striking first. Dennis Packard put home his sixth goal of the season past Devils G Frank Doyle at 4:07. The Devils would re-take the lead later in the period when Stephen Gionta capitalized on a Bruins turnover in their own zone and sent a wrist shot over the glove of Toivonen at 12:02. The Bruins tied the game for the! second time at 13:42, as Marco Rosa netted his 7th goal of the campaign.
The third period saw the Devils take their third lead of the night, at 13:47, when Barry Tallackson deflected a Mike Mottau shot past Toivonen. The Devils finally eclipsed 100! 0 penalty minute mark on the season, but it proved costly as the Bruins were able to capitalize on the man advantage. With C Rod Pelley in the box for hooking, Bruins LW T.J. Trevelyan tied the score at 3-3 with his 28th goal of the year. The Bruins outshot the Devils 17-12 in the period, and Frank Doyle finished up regulation with 29 saves.
At 1:47 of overtime, with Trevelyan in the box for tripping, the Devils converted to win the game.
