Desrochers scored his first goal of the season in Sound Tigers' loss to Portland

Michigan graduate and former teammate of Jeff Tambellini, Andrew Ebbett scored a goal and two assists to help the Portland Pirates beat the Sound Tigers 5-2. Jean Desrochers recorded his first goal as a Bridgeport Sound Tiger after his call-up this week from the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL.

Geoff Peters opened the scoring 3:12 into the first period with his first goal of the season. Stephen Dixon had the primary assist and Joe Callahan also recorded an assist on the goal to give the Pirates the 1-0 lead. About six minutes later, Callahan scored his first goal of the season, giving Portland the 2-0 lead. Drew Miller and Ebbett assisted on the tally that came on the power-play while Scott Ford was in the penalty box serving a two-minute hooking penalty. The Sound Tigers went on the man-advantage with about three minutes remaining in the opening period and Kyle Okposo was able to jump on a bad bounce in front and smack the puck past Pirates' goalie, Mike McKenna. The goal was Okposo's fourth of the season and second in as many games. Matt Keith and Jamie Fraser had the assists on the marker making the score 2-1. The Sound Tigers appeared as if they were back in the game after Okposo's goal, but Portland was able to regain their two-goal lead less than a minute later. Pirates' leading goal scorer, Geoff Platt chipped his 25th marker of the season under the arm of Sound Tigers' starting net-minder, Joey MacDonald, once again, making the Sound Tigers' deficit two.

Neither team was able to score in the second period, but in the third period, Sound Tigers' Desrochers scored his first goal of the season pulling the Sound Tigers within a goal, at 3-2. Jason Pitton pushed the puck from the near corner to Pascal Morency, returning to the Sound Tigers' lineup for the first time since November 23rd against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Morency spun a quick pass in the slot to Desrochers who took the pass and ripped a shot over the shoulder of McKenna, his third American Hockey League goal in his career, coming at the 10:13 mark of the final period. With the Sound Tigers buzzing, the Pirates scored two unanswered goals, to squash any hopes of a come-back for the Sound Tigers to win the game. Jason King scored just over a minute later, with 20th goal of the season on assists from Tyler Bouck and Ebbett making the score 4-2. Ebbett would add his 11th goal of the season before the period would expire with King adding the lone assist to win the game for Portland, 5-2.

The Sound Tigers finished 1-for-7 on the power-play and went 7-for-8 on the penalty-kill. MacDonald, who started the game but was ejected due to an altercation late in the third period, suffered the loss, making 23 saves on the 27 shots. McKenna stopped 20 shots tonight to earn the win.

On Wednesday, the Worcester Sharks will skate into town for the second time this season, with face-off coming at 7:30 p.m.
