NORFOLK, VA - Karl Stewart and Kyle Wanvig each notched a goal and an assist, but the Norfolk Admirals (17-28-2-4) fell to the Binghamton Senators (24-19-4-4) 3-2 on Saturday evening at Norfolk Scope Arena. The loss snapped Norfolk's four-game winning streak and eight-game point streak.
The Senators opened scoring while skating with a four-on-three advantage 14:31 into the first period. Matt Carkner sent a slap shot from the high slot that sailed into the top right corner of the net behind Admirals goaltender Marc Denis.
Norfolk tied the game at 1-1 just twenty seconds later. Adam Henrich sent a shot from the left point that bounced off Binghamton goaltender Brian Elliott to the bottom of the right circle. Wanvig spotted the loose puck and sent it into the cage while falling to the ice at 14:51.
The Senators re-claimed the lead 6:43 into the second stanza. Josh Hennessy slipped past a Norfolk defender near the top of the circles in the Admirals' zone and then collected a pass from Tyler Donati. Hennessy deked from forehand to backhand before shooting past Denis' left leg.
The Binghamton lead doubled under three minutes later. Lawrence Nycholat sent a shot from the right half wall through traffic that hit Denis and kicked out to the slot. Brian Lee one-timed the rebound past Denis' outstretched right leg at 9:32.
The Admirals cut their deficit to one goal just 16 seconds into the third period on a Karl Stewart goal. David Schneider then threw the puck from the right point toward the bottom of the right circle where Stewart re-directed it past Elliott's left leg.
However, the Admirals were unable to find the equalizer despite 13 third period shots.
Marc Denis (23 shots, 20 saves) was saddled with the loss. Brian Elliott (30 shots, 28 saves) earned the victory.
Norfolk was 0-4 on the power play. Binghamton was 1-3.
The Admirals will continue a six-game homestand on Wednesday when they welcome back the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a 7:15 tilt. Wednesday night is also Baxter's College Night. Students with a valid, current college ID can receive $8 tickets and discounted food at Baxter's Sports Lounge for Wednesday night games throughout the season. Limited tickets are available only at the Scope Box Office. For more details, visit norfolkadmirals.com.
