Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Des Moines will still be on the hunt for the team's first win of the season when the Buccaneers return home to face Green Bay and Tri-City next weekend.
The Buccaneers (0-3-2-0) fell to the USNTDP (USA-18) on Friday night 4-1, and lost by that same score on Saturday in Youngstown.
At USA Hockey Arena on Friday, Des Moines outshot and perhaps outplayed USA in the first half, holding the game scoreless til nearly the midway point of the second period. That's when Teddy Stiga (Boston University) scored the first of his two goals to give USA a 1-0 lead. Kamil Bednarik (SHG) and the second goal by Stiga came back-to-back before the 2nd period came to a close and USA held a 3-0 lead.
Owen West (Michigan State // Pittsboro, IN) scored his first goal of the season less than a minute into the third period to cut USA's lead to two. But USA came back with a power play goal by Austin Baker to give them a 4-1 advantage and that would be the final score. Adam Moller (Uncommitted // Stockholm, Sweden) was in goal for the Buccaneers in his first appearance of the 2023-24 season, making 16 saves as the Bucs outshot USA 33-20, but were 0-for-4 on the power play, while USA scored shorthanded and was 1-for-1 on the power play, to spite Des Moines' disciplined effort.
On Saturday in Youngstown, the Phantoms and Buccaneers traded goals in the first period. Youngstown got on the board 12:58 into the first with a goal by Ryan Botterill. The Bucs had the answer with Braden Rourke (Uncommitted // Urbandale, IA). Rourke's first goal of the season came with 1:40 remaining in the first and the teams were tied 1-1 after one.
Youngstown took the lead on a 5-on-3 power play in a penalty-filled second period and wouldn't surrender that lead. Andrew Strathmann lit the lamp for the Phantoms to make it 2-1 through two. In the third, Michael Burchill and Adam Pietila scored six minutes apart to increase the Youngstown lead to 4-1, with Burchill's goal coming on the power play.
Des Moines was 0-for-6 on the power play on Saturday, while Youngstown was 2-for-9. Jonathan Reinholdt (Uncommitted // Lulea, Sweden) made 25 of 29 saves in his second start and fourth appearance for Des Moines.
The Buccaneers are back in the hom barn at Buccaneer Arena on Friday, Oct. 13 for the first 2-for-1 Beer Night of the season when the Green Bay Gamblers (3-3-0-0) come to town for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop. On Saturday, Oct. 14, the Western Conference leading Tri-City Storm take the ice for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop.
