Hawks Suffer in the Siouxland

October 7, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Sioux Falls Stampede staved off a Waterloo Black Hawks comeback bid Saturday, pulling away with the game's final two goals for a 7-4 result.

Waterloo had also fallen by three on Friday to the Sioux City Musketeers. The back-to-back losses drop the Hawks to 1-4-0 through the first three weekends on the United States Hockey League schedule

The Stampede were ahead by one after a high-flying first period. Sioux Falls went to their initial lead on the game's first power play at 3:34. Matthew Grimes' shot from the left point flew over the shoulder of a screened Niko Goich.

The Hawks responded during their first advantage. At 9:28, Waterloo was in the latter half of a four-minute power play when Gavin Lindberg stuffed in a puck that was trickling through the crease. The tie lasted just nine seconds. Sioux Falls won the ensuing faceoff, springing Tyler Borgula up the ice on a breakaway, and he patiently flipped in a chance.

Waterloo tied the game a second time at 14:07. Gavyn Thoreson eluded a defender in a one-on-one situation, then set up John Mustard to bang home a shot as Mustard came steaming into the zone.

Borgula's second goal with 1:19 left before intermission put Sioux Falls in front again. The Stampede forward capitalized when an initial shot didn't have much behind it, leaving the puck loose at the edge of the crease.

The second period was just as wild. The Stampede extended their lead to 5-2 by scoring twice in the first four minutes out of intermission. Chris Pelosi had the first goal at the 28-second mark, using his skate to redirect a pass from Borgula. Then John McNelis positioned himself at the top of the crease to tip in a centering feed from Jake Toll in the left corner.

Both teams were missing skaters when the Hawks began their rally. A Waterloo rush began three-on-three; by the time a centering pass deflected into the net, coincidental penalties had just ended, technically making it a four-on-four score at 12:24. Michael Phelan's pass for Mustard was knocked into the net off a defender.

Then the Hawks made the period a wash with a score as 7.7 seconds remained. Brock Schultz won a draw; Carson Reed waited at the top of the right circle as a screen developed, then put a low wrister past Caleb Heil's stick.

However, Waterloo's momentum ultimately crested with intermission. Despite several good chances early in the third, the Hawks could not level the score. Sioux Falls added an insurance goal at 10:51 when Artur Cholach's dump-in took an unexpected bounce off the corner glass. From there, the puck hit the side of the Waterloo net, springing into the left circle where J.J. Wiebusch was waiting to put it into a vacated net. Goalie Calvin Vachon was behind the cage, expecting to find the puck there based on its original flight path.

Alex Rybakov added a true empty-netter as the period waned.

The Hawks' final game before their home opener is Friday in Chicago against the Steel. Waterloo's home schedule begins the next night - Saturday, October 14th - versus the Omaha Lancers. Tickets for that game and all other 2023/24 home matchups are available now from tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
