Madison Beats Lincoln 6-1 on Road, Improves to 4-0-0-0 on Season

October 7, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release

Madison started the first of a two game set in Lincoln against the Stars on Saturday night. Although the Capitols don't lead the Eastern Conference in points, trailing multiple teams in games played, they are the last team to not have lost a game yet this season in the conference at 4-0-0-0 after the team's third six-plus-goal performance of the young season in the capital of Nebraska.

Although the scoring total will be highlighted in the story below, it must be said how the Capitols goaltending has played through four games this year. In four games, Madison has outscored opponents 22-10. On Saturday, Patriks Berzins made his second start of the season stopping 45 of 46 Lincoln shots on goal. His save percentage improves to a league leading .973 after the win on Saturday. He has only allowed two goals through 120 minutes of action this season as well, which has only been matched by Anton Castro of Fargo.

The one goal that got past Berzins on Saturday came on the power play for the Stars in the first period. Luckily for Madison, the Caps were able to answer with a goal of their own just about three minutes later to take a 1-1 tie into intermission number one. The goal was scored by the team's leading scorer Max Nagel, who found his third of the season.

Less than a minute into the second, Madison was able to strike on the power play to take the team's first lead of the night off of Finn Brink's stick for his fourth of the season. That lead would be one that the Caps wouldn't give up the rest of the way as reigning USHL Defenseman of the Week, Will Felicio, was able to strike for his second of the season to extend the lead to 3-1. Before the teams went back into the locker room at the end of the period, Brendan Lamb found his first of the season with a shot that only he knew where it was to extend the lead to 4-1.

In the third, both Will Felicio and Max Nagel found their second goals of the night to take home a 6-1 victory. Andrew Kuzma and Jake Rozzi both picked up a pair of assists in the game on Saturday night although they were unable to find the back of the net themselves to maintain their tie of second place in points on the team behind Nagel. Nagel has now recorded multiple points in every game this season and leads the league in points per game at 2.25.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night for the second of the two-game set and the final time of the regular season. Puck drop is set for 5:05 pm in Lincoln and video can be found on FloHockey.

The team returns home for a two-game series against the Muskegon Lumberjacks on October 13 and 14. The team is designating the weekend as 608 weekend as you'll get a beer and a brat for $6.08 at the games that weekend.
