SPOKANE, Wash. - The Carolina Hurricanes announced in a press release on Monday that they have recalled former Chief and Spokane native Derek Ryan from the Charlotte Checkers (AHL). The recall is Ryan's first to the NHL.

From the Hurricanes' release (hurricanes.nhl.com):

"This marks the first career NHL recall for Ryan, 29. The Spokane, WA, native leads all Checkers skaters in goals (17) and points (42) this season, in 55 games played. Ryan totaled 15 goals and 45 assists (60 points) in 55 games for Orebro of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) in 2014-15, earning Forward of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors in the SHL. Prior to playing in Sweden, Ryan (5'10", 170 lbs.) spent three seasons in the Austrian league after completing a collegiate career at the University of Alberta. Ryan also played parts of four seasons with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, the final two of which were under current Hurricanes Head Coach Bill Peters."

Ryan played with the Chiefs for three full seasons from 2004 to 2007, scoring 67 goals and 167 points in 216 games. He used his earned Western Hockey League Scholarship package to attend the University of Alberta before excelling overseas on his way to a contract with the Hurricanes' organization.
