Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power fell 6-5 to the Delmarva Shorebirds Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Four early runs set the tone for the Shorebirds as Delmarva earned the four-game split against West Virginia.
The Shorebirds took an early lead against Power starter Zack Dodson in the top of the first inning. With one out, Riley Hornback and Ty Kelly reached on consecutive singles. Jeremy Nowak followed and reached on a Drew Maggi error to load the bases. After a lineout to short that kept the bases full, Joe Oliveira singled in a pair and Garabez Rosa doubled in two more for a 4-0 edge.
In the home half of the second, the Power loaded the bases with no one out, but could only generate one run of offense when Chase Lyles scored on a ground out by Eric Avila.
West Virginia further cut into the deficit with a two-run third inning. The Power loaded the bases with one out against Delmarva starter Tim Berry on a single and back-to-back walks. Dan Grovatt singled in one run, while a Kawika Emsley-Pai sacrifice fly plated the other to put West Virginia down by one at 4-3.
Delmarva extended its lead by one in the fifth inning on a double, a sac bunt, and a sacrifice fly from Kelly, but the Power answered with a run in the home half of the inning to keep the margin at one run. Andy Vasquez scored on a fielder's choice when he slid past the tag of Shorebirds catcher Joe Oliveira to help the Power keep pace trailing 5-4.
Garabez Rosa hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning; a one out shot off the left centerfield scoreboard to extend the advantage to 6-4 Shorebirds.
Lyles helped West Virginia cut the deficit down to one in the bottom of the seventh inning with his first South Atlantic league home run. Lyles went 188 at bats before driving his first home run of the season out of the ballpark.
Dodson (5-4) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs, one earned, on five hits over five innings. Mike Wright notched his first win of the season with four innings of relief work for Delmarva. David Walters pitched a perfect ninth for his 30th save.
West Virginia travels to Greensboro on Monday to open a four-game road trip against the Grasshoppers. The Power return to Appalachian Power Park on Friday, August 26, to take on the Lexington Legends in a five game series that concludes the 2011 home schedule.
