Shorebirds Hold on for 6-5 Win Over Power

Charleston, W. Va. - The Delmarva Shorebirds bullpen worked six stellar innings to lead the Shorebirds to a 6-5 win over the West Virginia Power on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. The Shorebirds bullpen combined to retire 12 of the final 13 hitters and the final seven of the game.

The Shorebirds sprinted to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Riley Hornback and Ty Kelly hit back-to-back singles. Then, Jeremy Nowak reached on an error by shortstop Drew Maggi. With two outs, Joe Oliveira rolled a two-run single into center field. Then, Garabez Rosa hit a doubled that one-hopped the left field wall to give the Shorebirds a 4-0 lead.

The Power got on the board in the second. Chase Lyles drew a leadoff walk and scored on a groundout to second by Eric Avila.

West Virginia tacked on two runs to pull within 4-3 in the third. Andy Vasquez hit a single to open the inning. After two walks were issued by Tim Berry, Dan Grovatt singled home Vasquez. Kawika-Emsley Pai hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Mel Rojas, Jr.

The Shorebirds led 5-4 in the sixth inning when Rosa connected on his first home run of the season over the left-center field wall to increase the lead to 6-4.

The Power trimmed the deficit to 6-5 on a solo homer by Chase Lyles in the seventh inning.

Mike Wright entered in the fourth for Tim Berry and earned the win over four strong innings. He allowed just two hits.

Kyle Simon tossed a scoreless eighth inning and David Walters earned his 30th save of the season in a perfect ninth inning. The Shorebirds bullpen allowed just two hits over the final six innings. They retired the final seven batters of the game.

Rosa and Joe Oliveira paced an 11-hit Shorebirds attack. Rosa went 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Oliveira was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. The six runs scored were the most over the eight-game road trip.

The Shorebirds return to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Monday, August 22 for game one against the Lakewood BlueClaws. LHP Matt Bywater is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
