Augusta Takes Charleston in Finale, 9-1

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta's Mike Kickham penned 7.0 shutout innings, as the GreenJackets humbled the RiverDogs, 9-1, in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium Sunday evening.

With the victory, Augusta wins the series improving to 32-22, 63-61 overall, while the Dogs lose for the sixth time in eight games, dropping to 23-33, 49-77 overall.

Augusta's Adam Duvall started the scoring in the first inning with a two-run homer to left field off Charleston starter Mike Gipson, his 22nd of the season to tie for third in the SAL, establishing a 2-0 cushion.

Ryan Scoma increased the GreenJackets lead to 3-0 in the third with a RBI double.

The robust Augusta offensive performance continued in the fourth on Jeff Arnold's leadoff solo home run for the 4-0 lead. Augusta then loaded the bases with two outs, and got a run home on a bases-loaded walk to Scoma, moving the count to 5-0. Devin Harris wrapped up the four-run inning with a laser two-run single to left field off reliever Kelvin Perez, as the score pushed to 7-0.

Gipson (0-2) hummed just 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs, with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

Arnold was at it again for the GreenJackets in the fifth, reaching on a leadoff double and coming plateward on a throwing error for an 8-0 Augusta advantage.

Ryan Lollis contributed a seventh-inning RBI single growing the lead to 9-0.

Kickham (5-8) gave up only two hits and allowed only one runner to third base in 7.0 brilliant innings in beating the RiverDogs for the second time this season.

Charleston posted a run in the eighth off reliever Gaspar Santiago cutting the deficit to 9-1. Mike Ferraro and Jeff Farnham hit consecutive two-out singles, and Ferraro scored the only run on a wild pitch.

Charleston returns to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Monday for a four-game series against the Greenville Drive, a Boston Red Sox affiliate. Game one, slated for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch, features RiverDogs southpaw Vidal Nuno (1-1, 2.57 ERA) against Greenville right-hander Keith Couch (6-4, 3.15 ERA).
