Stockton Ports News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - In what's been an injury-plagued season, Stockton Ports outfielder Greg Deichmann enjoyed a game in which he was the difference-maker on Wednesday night at The Hangar. Deichmann's three-run homer in the fourth inning was the centerpiece of a 6-4 Stockton win over the Lancaster JetHawks, the Ports' third consecutive victory dating back to Sunday's win over San Jose.
The JetHawks struck first with a run in the bottom of the third. With runners at the corners and one out, Bret Boswell struck out and Manny Melendez, the runner at first, broke for second and drew a throw down from catcher Collin Theroux. Melendez was safe at second and Max George came down the third base line to score and give the JetHawks a 1-0 lead.
JetHawks starter Logan Longwith gave up a double and a single with one out in the fourth which brought Deichmann to the plate with two aboard. Deichmann hit a three-run homer to right field, his first of the season, giving the Ports a 3-1 advantage.
Ports starter Evan Manarino, with one on and one out in the bottom of the fourth, gave up an RBI double to Alan Trejo that cut the Stockton lead to 3-2. The Ports would go on to load the bases on three straight singles to open the fifth, knocking Longwith from the contest. Heath Holder (8-1) came on from the bullpen and recorded a strikeout, a pop-fly in foul territory and another strikeout to escape the jam unscathed.
Longwith would not factor into the decision as he went four-plus innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out one.
Lancaster tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as George was hit by a pitch to open the frame and scored when Melendez followed with a bunt-single compounded by an errant throw by third baseman Edwin Diaz. Diaz' throw allowed George to score from first and put Melendez at third with nobody out. Manarino, however, would strike out Boswell, get Colton Welker to ground out to the shallow infield and Tyler Nevin to ground out to second to end the inning and strand Melendez at third.
Manarino would go on to pick up the victory, going five innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out four.
Holder, after escaping the massive jam in the fifth, worked the sixth and retired the first two batters of the frame. Theroux would extend the inning with a double and Eric Marinez followed and drew a walk. Cobie Vance then delivered an RBI single to left to score Theroux and give the Ports a 4-3 lead. Chase Calabuig followed with a two-run single to shallow right that made it a 6-3 Stockton advantage.
Holder would suffer his first loss of the season, going two innings and allowing three runs on three hits all with two outs in the sixth.
Will Gilbert took over for Manarino in the sixth and gave up a leadoff triple to Vince Fernandez who scored on an RBI groundout by Trejo to make it 6-4. It was the only run allowed by Gilbert in his lone inning of work.
Pat Krall would work two scoreless innings beginning in the seventh and Angel Duno (SV, 15) set the side down in order in the ninth to notch his 15th save of the season.
Alexander Guillen, Robert Tyler and Ben Bowden each worked a scoreless inning down the stretch for the JetHawks.
The Ports and JetHawks close out their three-game set on Thursday night at The Hangar. Matt Milburn (7-4, 3.39 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Antonio Santos (2-2, 5.12 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PDT.
