
Defenseman Returns to Walleye

Toledo, OH - Defenseman Beau Schmitz has agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2016-17 season. Schmitz collected 13 points (5G, 8A) over 68 games played last season for the Walleye, his first season in Toledo. His 68 contests were second only to Dominic Zombo (69) on the Walleye. The native of Howell, Michigan also collected another six assists over seven playoff contests. Schmitz has appeared in 130 career games at the ECHL level with six goals, 20 assists and 63 penalty minutes.
Head Coach Dan Watson said, "Beau was a steady influence on our defensemen last season. He brought his wealth of experience to our team and excelled in every situation we put him in."
During the 2014-15 year, Schmitz skated the whole season with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League. In 38 games played, he posted seven assists and 26 penalty minutes. Since turning professional, the 25-year-old defenseman has appeared in 82 games at the AHL level (all with Charlotte), scoring six goals with 17 assists and 56 penalty minutes.
Prior to turning professional, Schmitz picked up 152 points (35G, 117A) over four years and 244 games with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League. He was an OHL Third Team All-Star in 2011-12 when collected career highs in goals (14), assists (40) and points (54).
Schmitz was team captain over his final two seasons with the Whalers.
