Stingrays Sign Kelly Cup Champion Danny Federico

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have agreed to terms with defenseman Danny Federico, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky announced today.

"We welcome Danny Federico to our roster," said Warsofsky. "As I've said before, defensemen can take longer to develop. We feel Danny is on the right track, and he has already mastered the toughest task: He knows what type of player he is. We've done our homework and we've been told how he moves the puck and makes that first pass well. He is extremely detailed in his own zone and is hard to play against. Winning a championship last season as a rookie will only help as he gains experience at the pro level."

The Acton, Massachusetts native helped the Allen Americans to a Kelly Cup Championship in 2015-16. Skating on loan from San Jose of the American Hockey League (AHL), Federico, 24, appeared in 65 games with Allen, notching seven points (one goal, six assists) to go along with 10 penalty minutes. He also skated in 10 playoff games for the Americans, notching four assists as Allen captured its second straight Kelly Cup.

"As I became a free agent, my agent was talking to some teams and mentioned South Carolina was interested," said Federico. "From everyone I talked with, I heard nothing but good things about the organization, the coaches, the ownership, and the fans. The place speaks for itself. I hear it's a great place to live, so when the Stingrays were interested, it was an easy decision to sign in South Carolina."

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defender played four seasons at Quinnipiac University, serving as a co-captain of the club during his senior season in 2014-15. He played in 132 NCAA games, finishing his career with 38 points (three goals, 35 assists) and a +46 rating. He was part of one of the most successful classes in Quinnipiac history, leading the Bobcats to three NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the Frozen Four and National Championship Game in 2013. Federico, a product of the Boston Jr. Bruins, was also an ECAC Third-Team All-Star in 2014-15.
