Waterloo, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks have added defenseman Nicholas Fascia from the Madison Capitols in exchange for forward James Hong in a trade announced by the two teams on Thursday.

Fascia is committed to Penn State University. The six-foot blue-liner from Blackwood, New Jersey appeared in 31 of 36 Madison games prior to being placed in the Capitols' season-ending injured reserve list on February 1st. In 2021/22, Fascia skated on the same Long Island Gulls team as Hawks forward Griffin Erdman.

"Nick is a player that I have always really appreciated. He went through some injuries last year with Madison, and we expect him to bounce back in a big way," said Black Hawks General Manager Bryn Chyzyk.

Prior to getting hurt, Fascia had four points (one goal, three assists) and was ranked third among Madison defensemen with 51 shots on net. His first USHL goal was a power play tally against the Youngstown Phantoms on October 13th. Fascia also notched two of his three assists during October. His USHL debut had come during a two-game stint for Madison as an affiliate in 2021/22.

Prior to the 2021/22 campaign, Fascia was selected by USA Hockey to join the nation's Under-17 Men's Select Team during the 2021 Five Nations Tournament in Switzerland. The U.S. was undefeated during the competition, bringing home the gold medal.

Beginning that fall, Fascia and Erdman skated together for the Gulls. In early 2022, Long Island reached the championship game of USA Hockey's U16 National Championship, finishing as runners-up to the Rochester Saints. Fascia notched a pair of assists during the six USA Nationals games played in the Detroit suburbs.

Hong took the ice in 118 regular season contests, plus an additional nine USHL playoff games over the last two years. In regular season competition, the 18-year-old had 26 goals and 23 assists. With 25 points last season (15 goals, 10 assists), Hong ranked 11th in scoring for Waterloo.

"We wish James nothing but the best moving forward with Madison," said Chyzyk. "James was a valuable piece of our team the past two seasons, well respected by his teammates and our coaching staff."

Waterloo will also receive future considerations as part of Thursday's trade.
