Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Brockton, MA -- The Worcester Tornadoes defense, which had been so good all series long, had a major meltdown in the bottom of the 9th, as the Brockton Rox scored four unearned runs to defeat the Tornadoes, 5-4, at Campanelli Stadium tonight.

The Tornadoes wasted a tremendous pitching performance from righty Matt Weagle who allowed just four hits and one earned run in 8.1 innings pitched. The Tornadoes got two runs in the 3rd inning on a bases loaded two-run single by Euvi Solano and tacked on two more in the 8th on a two-run home run by Andrew Wishy to make it 4-1.

Weagle came out for hte bottom of the 9th, seeking his first professional complete game victory and struck out Eugene Julien for the first out. But Guye Senjem blooped a single to left center bringing up Francisco Lebron who hit a tailor made double-play ball to short that Bobby Tewksbary was unable to handle for an error. After a Jason Radwan bloop hit to center made it 4-2, John Birtwell was brought on to try to get the save. Matt Maloney hit a slow grounder to third that Euvi Solano couldn't handle for another error, loading he bases. After a strikeout of Fredy De La Cruz, a Birtwell wild pitch brought home Lebron and put the tying and winning runs in scoring position for Jeremy Coronado. Coronado then doubled over Andrew Wishy's head in right for the game-winner.

Luis Carreras (3-0) was credited with the win in relief of starter John Kelly and Birtwell (2-2) took the loss. It was the second walk-off win against the Tornadoes this season. The Tornadoes will try to bounceback and take three of four from the Rox in their series in Brockton Thursday night when they send righty Alex Pena to the mound opposite Brockton righty Gary Galvez. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
