Defenders Win 7-2

August 27, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

READING, PA- What a difference a day makes! The Defenders brought the balance of pitching, hitting and defense as they coasted to 7-2 win over Reading.

Eliezer Alfonzo woke up on the good side of the bed. He delivered a big double down the left field line in the first to drive in Haines and Richardson for an early 2-0 lead for the Defenders.

The third inning brought more fireworks as Alfonzo got the juices flowing when he stepped into one and sent a monster homerun over the left center field wall to plate Richardson who singled and Klink who walked for a 5-0 Defenders advantage.

Joey Martinez came into the contest with the league's second best era at 2.52 behind Trenton's Phil Coke (no longer in the league) in hopes of delivering a stellar performance to take the title in 2008 with best earned run average. Martinez cruised through the first four before he ran into a tough bat of Brad Harman who sent a lining shot over the left field wall to get Reading on the board, 5-2.

The Defenders responded in the seventh with two more runs as Haines scored on a wild pitch after he single to leadoff the inning than Witter drew his 62nd walk of the season with the bases loaded to give Connecticut the 7-2 lead. That's all they would need as the bullpen shut the door on the R-Phils.

Martinez picked up his tenth win of the season tossing five innings, giving up just six hits, two earned runs, walking three and striking out four. J.D. Durbin suffered his fifth loss in the spot start for Andrew Carpenter who got called up to Philadelphia to help the fatigued bullpen.

Connecticut and Reading will meet for the final time in the 2008 season tomorrow at 7:05pm from First Energy Stadium in Reading, PA. Catch all the action on the Defenders Radio Network starting at 6:50pm on the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-game Show.
