Akron Aeros third baseman Wes Hodges 2008 Eastern League Rookie of the Year
August 27, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1) News Release
Portland, ME - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Akron Aeros third baseman Wes Hodges has been selected as the 2008 Eastern League Rookie of the Year. Hodges is making his Double-A debut with the Aeros this season after hitting .288 with 71 RBI and being selected as a Carolina League All-Star while making his professional debut with the Kinston Indians last year. The 23-year old has been one of the top offensive players in the Eastern League this season, batting .285 (138-for-484) with 25 doubles, three triples, 16 homers, 91 RBI, 66 runs scored, 52 walks, three steals, a .353 on-base percentage and a .448 slugging percentage in 128 games. Wes, who is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, is currently second in the league in RBI (91) and is also ranked among the league leaders in hits (138-tied 4rd), total bases (216-6th) and games played (128-tied 7th). Hodges has reached base in all but 25 of the games he has played in for the Aeros this season, including a streak of 25 consecutive games from June 3rd-25th. He has also recorded multiple hits in 38 different games this season.
With his performance this season it is not surprising the 6'2", 200 lb. slugger has won numerous awards and accolades, including taking home the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week award for the week ending June 15th, being named to the Southern Division roster for the 2008 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game and playing for the US Team in the 2008 Futures Game at Yankee Stadium. Wes was also selected as the third baseman on the 2008 Eastern League Season Ending All-Star Team.
Hodges was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 2006 draft after hitting .329 (72-for-219) with 20 doubles, 11 home runs, 68 RBI and 49 runs scored in 58 games during his junior season at Georgia Tech.
Reading catcher Lou Marson and New Hampshire second baseman Scott Campbell each finished tied for second place in the voting for the award, which was voted on by Eastern League managers and coaching staffs, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media.
The announcements of the winners of remaining Eastern League season ending awards, the Eastern League Manager of the Year Award, the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year Award and the Eastern League Most Valuable Player Award, will be made on Thursday, August 28th.
