Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders avoided a home sweep against the Altoona Curve as they roasted their opponent in an 8-0 rout on Father's Day.

Connecticut found the run column in the first inning as Ben Copeland led off the frame with a triple. Kyle Haines drew a one-out walk and Travis Ishikawa hit a sharp groundball to his counterpart in Jason Delaney who muffed the play and Copeland came in to score. Simon Klink singled in Haines as the Defs grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Garrett Broshuis started the game for the Defenders and he was marvelous. The righty worked seven full innings, gave up no runs, scattered just three hits, walked none and fanned five. During a stretch that started at the end of the second and culminated in the sixth, Broshuis retired 11 in a row.

The Defs didn't start piling on runs until the eighth inning where things got out of hand. Nestor Rojas started the madness with a single, Olmo Rosario drew a walk, Ben Copeland took a free pass to load the bags and Antoan Richardson chopped a ground ball through the drawn-in infield under the glove of the third baseman to score one. Haines cracked a single to center to plate one, Ishikawa blistered a two-run double, Eddy Martinez-Esteve knocked an RBI groundout and Klink belted a base hit to score the sixth and final run of the frame to make it 8-0.

Sergio Romo locked things down in the ninth as the Defenders broke a two-game skid. Connecticut will travel to New Hampshire for a three-game set against the Fisher Cats. Listen to all the action on the Defenders Radio Network or anywhere in the world at ctdefenders.com.
