Altoona Curve News Release
NORWICH - The Altoona Curve were unable to pull off a sweep of Connecticut, falling to the Defenders 8-0 at Dodd Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The score was not indicative of how close the game was, as Curve starting pitcher Derek Hankins (1-3) allowed just two runs and two hits over the span of six innings. The righty gave up a pair of early runs in the bottom half of the first inning to fall behind. He quickly righted the ship, though and finished his outing by retiring the last 16 batters he faced.
Chris Duffy returned to the Curve on Sunday as part of a rehab assignment with the Pirates, and the 2004 Curve M.V.P. started in centerfield for Altoona and led off. Duffy went 0-for-3 before being replaced by Pedro Powell.
Altoona (29-37) was unable to muster any offense on Sunday. Winning pitcher Garrett Broshuis (5-5) kept the Curve bats quiet over seven shutout innings. The Curve were only able to pound out five total hits in the contest.
Leading Altoona 2-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Connecticut scored six runs off the Curve bullpen. Pat Bresnehan uncharacteristically allowed five runs over the course of one inning, while Derek Antelo allowed a run over one frame pitched also.
The Curve will have a scheduled off day on Monday before they return home to Blair County Ballpark to open a six-game hometsand on Tuesday.
Both the Reading Phillies (AA/Phillies) and Bowie Baysox (AA/Orioles) will invade BCB over the hometand. Highlighting the homestand will be three fireworks shows and an appearance by two-time Curve M.V.P. Adam Hyzdu on Thursday, June 19. Hyzdu will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs. The first 2,000 through the gates on Thursday will also receive an Adam Hyzdu bobblehead, courtesy of Dodge.
Great seats for all six games are still available and can be obtained by calling 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com or in person at the BCB box office.
