DeCaro Wins Second Monthly Award

March 4, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Central Hockey League today announced that the Mudbugs' John DeCaro has been named the Sher-Wood CHL Goaltender of the Month for February. The award is DeCaro's second of the season and has now belonged to a Mudbugs goaltender for four consecutive months, with Ken Carroll winning two honors as well.

DeCaro continued his amazing season during the month of February, going 8-1-0 in ten appearances with a 1.45 goals-against average, .939 saves percentage and three shutouts. The second-year pro from Marysville, Washington was already 2-0 in February when he finished breaking the CHL record with a shutout streak of 265:52 from January 20th through February 5th, when he finally gave up a goal to Wichita but still won. He then beat Oklahoma City before suffering his only defeat of the second month, a 3-1 setback to Texas on February 10th. In his very next start, DeCaro set a new All-time CHL record with his ninth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over Austin . That ninth shutout was also voted the CHL performance of the week and put DeCaro ahead of the four previous goaltenders who had reached eight shutouts in one season, but never a ninth. The 6-3, 208 lb. netminder then beat Corpus Christi before recording another shutout with 31 saves against Mississippi to extend his league record to 10 shutouts this season. Finally, DeCaro defeated Rocky Mountain 4-1 last Thursday to finish off the month.

DeCaro leads the CHL this season with 23 wins, a 1.64 GAA, .942 SPCT (both are on pace to set new league records) and those 10 shutouts (already a league record). Since starting the year 0-3-1, he has gone 23-2-2 to run his season record to 23-5-3 and help the Mudbugs to the best record in the CHL. He played in the 2008 All-Star game and was also named Sher-Wood CHL Goaltender of the month for November after going 6-0 that month before Ken Carroll won the monthly honor for both December and January. Last season, the University of Alaska-Anchorage product was named the CHL's Most Outstanding goaltender, played in the All-Star game and made both the All-CHL and CHL All-Rookie teams.

DeCaro and his Mudbugs teammates will be in Corpus Christi on Friday, embarking on a three-game road trip through the Southeast Division. After Friday's meeting with the Rayz, Bossier-Shreveport will battle Laredo on Saturday night and Rio Grande Valley next Tuesday to close out their Southern Conference schedule this year. The Mudbugs and Rayz will drop the puck at 7:05 pm on Friday night, with pregame coverage set to begin at 6:45 pm on 1130 AM KWKH. The game will also be shown live online on the CHL Network.
