De Oleo Reaches Double-Digit Dingers in Rain-Shortened Loss

SAVANNAH, GA - Eduardo de Oleo blasted his team-leading 10th home run for the Charleston RiverDogs on Thursday evening, but the Savannah Sand Gnats snapped a five-game RiverDogs win streak with a 4-1 Sand Gnats victory at Historic Grayson Stadium in South Atlantic League action. The game was officially called due to rain before the start of the eighth inning.

Charleston is now 8-14 in the second half and 41-51 for the year. Savannah's records are 16-6 and 60-28, respectively, which are also the best marks in those categories for the entire league.

The Sand Gnats charged to a 3-0 lead during the second inning. Matt Oberste was hit by a pitch from Gabe Encinas, who was making his 2014 RiverDogs debut. Cole Frenzel singled and Victor Cruzado grounded out to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Oberste and Frenzel scored during a single from Colton Plaia. Yeixon Ruiz followed with a single, a stolen base, and a run scored after a Jonathan Johnson single.

A unique sacrifice fly in the third pushed Savannah's lead to 4-0. Champ Stuart led off with a walk and stole second base while Dominic Smith was at the plate. Smith flew out against Rookie Davis and Stuart scored from second base on the play.

de Oleo's solo shot in the top of the fifth inning put Charleston within 4-1. With one out and an 0-2 count against Ricky Knapp, de Oleo slugged his 10th home run of the season over the left field wall. However, the game would be scoreless following the blast. A rain delay started right before the eighth inning could begin, and the game was eventually called due to rain.

Knapp earned the win and improved to 4-5 for Savannah. He allowed just four hits and one run in a seven-inning complete game. Encinas slid to 0-1 after giving up three runs in two frames during his 2014 RiverDogs debut.
