Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, Ga.- The Savannah Sand Gnats won a rain-shortened 4-1 decision in seven innings over the Charleston RiverDogs Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The rain began in the top of the fifth inning, and continued until the game was delayed before the top of the eighth inning.
The Gnats (16-6/60-28) jumped on top with a three-run second inning. Catcher Colton Plaia brought home the first two runs of the inning with a bloop single near the rightfield line. Second baseman Jonathan Johnson lined a single into leftcenter to plate shortstop Yeixon Ruiz.
Savannah added a run in the third thanks to centerfielder Champ Stuart's speed. Stuart drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Then first baseman Dominic Stuart lifted a fly ball to the warning track. Stuart sprinted to third and turned and went home before the Dogs could set up an effective relay for a two-base sacrifice fly.
The Dogs (8-14/41-50) scored their only run on a homerun by catcher Eduardo DeOleo in the fifth.
Savannah starter Ricky Knapp was sharp over his seven innings. He allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out four batters and walked two to earn the win, his fourth of the year.
The Gnats will send RHP Robert Gsellman (7-3, 2.81) to the mound against LHP Chaz Hebert (0-2, 4.10).
