Daubenspeck Signs In Hershey
August 22, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Former South Carolina Stingrays netminder Kirk Daubenspeck signed a contract with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League last week. Daubenspeck was expected to earn a deal at the next level after taking advantage of a late season call up with the Portland Pirates of the AHL last year.
The veteran from Madison, WI played in 28 games with the Pirates a year ago, putting up a goals against average of 2.31 and a record of 14-12-1.
"Kirk is an American Hockey League goaltender. There is no doubt about it," commented Rays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "He has gotten better as his career has gone on and he has seen what it takes to move up. We wish him the best of luck."
Daubenspeck helped the Stingrays to the Kelly Cup Championship in 2001. He could be the next former Stingray to play in the National Hockey League! Stay Tuned!
The absence of Daubenspeck presents some interesting options for the Rays, who will most likely receive a goaltender from the Washington Capitals. Second year back stop Maxime Daigneault is one player familiar to Stingrays fans who could find his way to the North Charleston Coliseum.
"Maxime is going to try to earn a spot with Washington or Hershey before he plays with us, but if he should come to this level, he would be a great pick up for our organization," added Fitzsimmons.
The Stingrays signed rookie forward Ty Morris last week. Morris becomes the sixth member of the Rays to sign. Morris (6'-200lb), a native of Millet, Alberta, was a 2003 fourth round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks.
Last season, he split his time between the Vancouver Giants and the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. In 42 games with the Rebels, he netted 22 goals and had 33 assists.
Stingrays Bowling Association Ready to Roll
The Rays announced the creation of the Stingrays Bowling Association last week. Through a new partnership with area lanes and the Stingrays, the league will give bowling enthusiasts and hockey fans the chance to participate in weekly competition, while receiving valuable merchandise and prizes.
Some of the benefits with each league include free food, game tickets, and official league apparel. The inaugural bowling season will culminate with a Stingrays Bowl -Off Championship, to be held on the ice at a game in March.
Individual leagues are currently being formed at area lanes and interested parties should contact their local bowling center or call 744-2248 for more information.
