WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 22, 2010) - Jon Gilmore hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to score Kyle Shelton and the Dash walked off a 5-4 winner against Potomac on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston overcame two Tyler Moore home runs and a pair of early deficits against major leaguer Scott Olsen to take the first game of the series.

Potomac (14-11, 45-50) jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Nate Jones in the first inning. Jones walked Josh Johnson and Derek Norris before surrendering a three-run home run to Moore. The homer broke a four-way tie for first place in home runs in the Carolina League this season.

The Dash (14-12, 57-39) responded with one run in the bottom of the first against Scott Olsen, who was on a major league rehab assignment. Brandon Short led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Gilmore then hit a bouncing ball to the shortstop to score Short and make it 3-1 Potomac.

Winston-Salem tied things in the bottom of the second inning. Ozzie Lewis doubled and Jose Martinez singled to start the frame. Two batters later, Shelton reached on an error by third baseman Dan Lyons and Lewis scored from third. After Mike Richard struck out, Short drove home Martinez with a single to right field to tie the game at three. Short was caught at second trying to take an extra base on the throw home.

With two outs in the third, Moore hit a solo home run to left field off Jones, his second long ball of the game and his 16th of the season. Drew Garcia countered with a solo shot of his own to lead off the bottom of the inning and tie the contest at four.

The offensive onslaught died down from the fourth inning onward, as both pitching staffs settled down. Olsen was lifted following the fifth inning and received a no-decision. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings, striking out four and walking none. Unofficially, he threw 67 pitches, 50 for strikes.

Jones also received a no-decision, giving up four runs on five hits in five innings. Charlis Burdie followed Jones and threw three scoreless innings, his only blemish a meaningless two-out single in the seventh.

Santos Rodriguez (2-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to get both teams to the bottom half still tied at four.

Trevor Holder, who was piggybacking after Olsen, hit Shelton with a pitch to start the inning. Richard then bunted a ball back to Holder, whose throw to second base glanced off shortstop Jose Lozada's glove, allowing both runners to reach safely. After Short sacrificed both men into scoring position, Holder intentionally walked Garcia to load the bases with one out for Gilmore.

The Carolina League's active batting average leader lifted the first pitch he saw to right field. Bill Rhinehart made an outstanding diving catch, but Shelton tagged and scored from third to win the ballgame for Winston-Salem. Potomac manager Gary Cathcart protested to no avail, arguing that Shelton left the bag early.

Gilmore was mobbed by his teammates near first base as the Dash earned its eighth walk-off win of the 2010 season. He finished the night with two RBI and a base hit.

Rodriguez earned the win, while Holder (0-2) was charged with the loss.

During the eighth inning, Seth Loman tied the Carolina League record for most times hit by a pitch in one season. He was drilled for the 24th time this season, tying former Winston-Salem Spirit Rusty Crockett, who accomplished the "feat" in 1989.

The Dash looks to make it two in a row against the P-Nats on Friday night. LHP Joe Serafin (0-2, 8.49) goes for his first Carolina League victory against RHP Brad Peacock (4-9, 4.02). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game broadcast starts at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
