Potomac Nationals News Release

(WINSTON SALEM, NC) On a night when Scott Olsen made a rehab appearance and Tyler Moore continued his ridiculous hot streak, umpires Joey Amaral and Tyler Wilson grabbed the headlines with a controversial call in the bottom of the ninth inning that sent the Winston-Salem Dash to a walk-off 5-4 victory.

With one out and the bases loaded in the ninth, Jon Gilmore hit a fly ball to right field that was caught by a diving Bill Rhinehart. Kyle Shelton appeared to leave early from third base to tag; after he crossed home plate, Potomac manager Gary Cathcart vehemently argued the call to no avail.

Moore staked Olsen to a three-run lead with his fifth home run of the week off Nate Jones, who had walked Josh Johnson and Derek Norris.

The Dash responded in the bottom half with a run of their own. Brandon Short led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Gilmore then hit a grounder to the shortstop to score Short and make it a 3-1 game.

Winston-Salem tied it in the second. Ozzie Lewis doubled and Jose Martinez singled to open the inning. Two batters later, Shelton reached on an error by third baseman Dan Lyons and Lewis scored from third. After Mike Richard struck out, Short drove home Martinez with a single to right that knotted the game at three.

Moore was at it again in the third inning; he hit another home run off Jones to deep left field to reclaim the lead. In their half of the third, Winston answered right back, when Drew Garcia led off the inning with a solo homer.

Pitchers dominated the next six innings; Charlis Burdie relieved Jones and Trevor Holder came on for the Nats.

Holder hit Shelton to open the bottom of the ninth. Michael Richard then bunted a ball back to Holder, whose throw to second base glanced off shortstop Jose Lozada's glove, allowing both runners to reach safely. After Short sacrificed both men into scoring position, Holder intentionally walked Garcia to load the bases with one out for Gilmore.

The Nats turn to Brad Peacock in game two of the four-game set tomorrow at 7 P.M. The broadcast can be heard beginning at 6:40.
