Frederick Keys News Release
On Thursday night, the Keys did not start off their homestand the way they hoped to. Frederick had as many errors, four, as they did hits on the night. With the game tied heading into the eighth inning, the Keys surrendered a run in the eighth and two in the ninth as they fell to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, 4-1.
After allowing a run to score in the first inning, RHP Oliver Drake did not surrender another run in his final five innings of work. In all, Drake allowed one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks over six innings.
Following five scoreless innings against the Pelicans starter, RHP Julio Teheran, the Keys scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. With C Brian Ward on second, CF Xavier Avery singled into centerfield. Manager Orlando Gomez immediately sent Ward home. L.V. Ware's throw was not in time as Ward slid home safely to tie the game.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Pelicans took the lead back in the eighth. 2B Dan Nelson led off the inning with a double. Following two fly outs, C Osman Marvel drove the John Mariotti pitch to centerfield for a two-out, RBI single. DH Gerry Rodriguez reached on an error to put runners at the corners for CF L.V. Ware. Ware hit a ball into rightfield that looked to score Marvel from third. However, Rodriguez missed second base on his way to third and was called out. The fielder's choice went 9-4-6 and the Marvel run did not count.
Trailing by a run, the Keys did not score in the eighth inning. The Pelicans scored two runs in the top of the ninth mainly in part to some miscues by Frederick. SS Pedro Florimon and 3B Billy Rowell each committed an error in the inning as Myrtle Beach plated two unearned runs.
Frederick failed to score in the ninth as they fell, 4-1. RHP Julio Teheran improved to 4-4 following a stellar outing. He allowed one run on three hits, struck out nine, and walked zero over seven innings. RHP John Mariotti fell to 3-4 in the loss.
The Keys and Pelicans will play game two of the four-game series on Friday night. RHP Zach Clark will make his 2010 Frederick debut on Friday. The Newark, DE native has pitched in Delmarva, Bowie, and Norfolk this season. He will be opposed by LHP Brett Oberholtzer (3-3, 4.11). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. with fireworks scheduled to follow the conclusion of the game.
