THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg lost a ninth inning lead and fell 10-7 in the deciding game of their series with Frederick at City Stadium...The Hillcats have now lost eight of their last nine games at home...Tonight is the first game of a four-game series against Salem and the fourth contest of a seven-game homestand...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 6-7 against the Red Sox thus far this season and are 4-2 at City Stadium...The Cats went 10-10 against the Sox in the 460 series last season and were 5-5 at Lewis Gale Field...In the post-season the Cats swept the Sox three games to none in the Mills Cup Championship...In the all-time series Salem leads 161-143 during the regular season...The last time the Sox came to town the Cats swept the three-game series, which is still the lone sweep of the season for the Green & Gold...
SEARCHING FOR SERIES FINALE: Last night Lynchburg lost their sixth straight series finale and dropped to 8-21 in the final game of series on the season...The Hillcats are also now 5-7 in rubber matches...
FORGETTABLE FRAME: The Hillcats entered the ninth inning last night leading 5-3 before the Keys plated seven runs in the top of the frame to propel them to the win...Lynchburg was 32-2 when leading after eight innings before last night...The inning included seven runs, four hits, one error, three wild pitches, two steals, a home run and a pitching change...The seven runs scored came just one shy of tying the most runs the Cats have allowed in an inning this season...Frederick scored eight runs in an inning against Lynchburg on April 10th...
PHAT PHIPPS: OF Denis Phipps went 2-for-5 last night with a double, a home run, four RBI and a runs scored...In the three-game series against Frederick the new Hillcats went 6-for-12 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, seven RBI and four runs scored...In seven games with Lynchburg since coming down from Double-A Carolina the outfielder is batting .370 (10-for-27) with three home runs and nine RBI...
WORKING OVERTIME: LHP Donnie Joseph walked three batters, uncorked two wild pitches, got charged with three runs (two earned) and did not record an out last night in taking his third loss of the season...It was the first time with the Hillcats the lefty has worked on back-to-back nights and it was the first time he has failed to retire a batter...He did go back-to-back in outings twice while with Dayton earlier this season and he did not allow a run in either of those appearances...Joseph has two of his three losses against Frederick, his only blown save and is posting a 5.40 ERA against the Keys compared to a 1.06 ERA (two earned runs in 17 innings) against the rest of the league...
A KISS FOR THE WHOLE WORLD: RHP Jordan Hotchkiss pitched five scoreless innings Tuesday night and left in line for his seventh victory of the season...The right-hander has not given up a run in his last two starts (12 innings)...The converted reliever leads the Carolina League in ERA (2.20), WHIP (0.99) and is second in batting average against (.205)...
AND WE'LL BE FREE: RHP Justin Freeman worked an and 1/3 scoreless innings last night and all four outs he recorded were via the strike out...He has now thrown 15 and 1/3 consecutive scoreless frames and over those 12 games his ERA has dropped from 4.60 to 3.09...He has now tied the longest scoreless streak by a Hillcat this season (RHP Nick Christiani, 5/11-6/8)...The right-hander is first in the league in games pitched (38), tied for third in games finished (25), tied for second in holds (7), first in fewest walks per nine innings (1.16) and third in fewest base runners per nine innings amongst relievers (9.45)...Freeman is also second on the team with six saves...In April his ERA was 7.88, in May it was 3.07, in June it dropped to 2.40 and so far in July he has not given up a run in eight appearances out of the pen...
BOW AND ARROW: LHP Andrew Bowman threw two and 1/3 innings of perfect relief Monday night...The lefty struck out a season-high five batters...He has now thrown five straight scoreless appearances (seven and 1/3 innings) and hasn't surrendered a run in eight of his last nine outings...His ERA has dropped from 6.90 to 5.40 over that time...
KNIGHT AND DAY: OF Kyle Day went 1-for-4 with run scored and a walk last night and has now hit in a season-high eight straight games...He has hit in 16 of his last 18 games and over that time he is 24-for-60 (.400) with three doubles, a triple, a grand slam, 11 RBI, nine runs scored, six walks and three steals...In those 18 contests Day has raised his average from .226 to .271...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Stolmy Pimentel was signed by the Red Sox in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic...In 2007 he pitched for the Dominican Red Sox and went 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 14 games (13 starts)...The next year he pitched for Short-Season Low-A Lowell and had a 5-2 mark with a 3.14 earned run average...Last season he moved up to full season Low-A Greenville, and posted a 10-7 mark with a 3.82 ERA in 24 games (23 starts) for the Drive...This season Pimentel has progressed to Advanced-A Salem and gone 5-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 18 starts...He has made two starts against Lynchburg and gone 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA...Pimentel was ranked as the 11th best prospect in the Red Sox system prior to the start of the season and he pitched in the XM Futures Game representing the World team...
