Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (SEPTEMBER 2, 2010) - For the second straight season, Dash manager Joe McEwing was named the Carolina League "Manager of the Year" and four Winston-Salem players were honored as year-end All-Stars. Eduardo Escobar, Jon Gilmore, Justin Greene, and Brandon Short were elected to the All-Star Team by the league's managers, general managers, and media. No other Carolina League team placed more than three players on the All-Star Team.
McEwing won the award for piloting the Dash to the best overall record in the Carolina League. After Thursday afternoon's win, Winston-Salem owned a 78-55 record, seven games better than second-place Salem. The Dash finished the first half with the best record in the league at 43-27 and the team is tied with Potomac for the best mark in the second half at 35-28. McEwing is a two-time winner after taking home the same honor in 2009 when he led Winston-Salem to back-to-back first place finishes in each half.
Escobar was named the All-Star shortstop for the CL, an honor he also held at mid-season. He played in 87 games for the Dash before his promotion to AA Birmingham on July 14. The slight Venezuelan routinely made dazzling defensive plays and was named the league's "Best Defensive Shortstop" by Baseball America last month. Offensively, he had the best season of his career, hitting .285 with three home runs, 39 RBI, 18 doubles, eight triples, and 57 runs scored. Escobar will be one of seven White Sox representatives in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. Since his promotion to the Barons, he is batting .258 with two home runs and 21 RBI.
Gilmore was elected to the All-Star Team as the CL utility infielder. He was also a mid-season All-Star and won the home run derby at the Carolina League-California League All-Star Game in Myrtle Beach. Gilmore is batting .317 this season with five homer, 78 RBI, 24 doubles, four triples, and 79 runs scored. Among the league leaders, he is second in batting average, third in games (129), first in at bats (547), fourth in RBI (78), first in hits (173), and second in runs scored (79).
Greene tied for the utility outfielder spot along with Wilmington's Adrian Ortiz. He enjoyed a breakout season for Winston-Salem, earning him a spot on the mid-season All-Star Team. In 74 games for the Dash, he hit .309 with ten home runs, 15 doubles, nine triples, and 45 runs batted in. He still leads the league in triples despite earning a promotion to AA on June 29. In addition to his superb numbers (which were compiled hitting primarily out of the ninth spot in the lineup), Greene was one of the most exciting outfielders in the league this season. He made numerous diving catches and had eight outfield assists for the Dash. Greene is still adjusting to AA pitching, hitting .236 with two home runs and 20 RBI for the Barons.
Short is another double All-Star honoree, having also been named a mid-season All-Star. A strong candidate for Carolina League MVP, Short was named the best defensive outfielder in the league by Baseball America last month and has been the engine for one of the best offenses in all of minor league baseball. Short has hit .316 this season with 15 home runs, 79 RBI, 31 doubles, five triples, and 77 runs scored. He ranks third in the league in batting average, third in RBI, second in hits (155), fifth in slugging percentage (.491), fifth in extra-base hits (51), tied for fourth in runs scored, and third in total bases (241). An oblique injury that has sidelined him for the last two weeks has been the only obstacle in preventing him from improving those statistics.
Other major award winners for the Carolina League this season were Potomac's Tyler Moore (Most Valuable Player) and Lynchburg's Jordan Hotchkiss (Pitcher of the Year).
