Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (SEPTEMBER 2, 2010) - A five-run first inning and a stellar performance from Joe Serafin were all the Dash needed in an 11-0 win over the Hillcats on Thursday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem cranked out 15 hits and won its seventh straight game.
The Dash (35-28) offense began the game wide-awake despite the noon start, as the first six men reached against Lynchburg starter Daniel Guerrero. After Drew Garcia and Jose Martinez singled, Jon Gilmore started the scoring with an RBI hit to make it 1-0 Winston. Seth Loman then walked to load the bases. Nick Ciolli and Luis Sierra produced back-to-back two-run doubles to give the Dash an early 5-0 lead.
Martinez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to push Winston ahead by half-a-dozen. The homer extended his hitting streak to a season-best ten games.
The early offense seemed the take the wind out of the Hillcats' (30-34, 59-75) sails, as Lynchburg seriously threatened the Dash lead only once. The Hillcats loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but Didi Gregorius flied out to left to retire the side.
Kyle Shelton blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Logan Johnson, Greg Paiml, and Garcia each drove in runs in the seventh to finish off the scoring for Winston.
Serafin (3-4) had his best start for the Dash, tossing six shutout innings and only yielding three hits. It was his second straight win and he became the fifth consecutive Winston starter to have a quality start. Ryan Kussmaul and Charlis Burdie pitched three scoreless innings to finish the game.
Guerrero (2-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in four innings.
The Dash has won the first three games of the series by a combined 27-2. Winston improved to 15-4 against the Hillcats this season and goes for the sweep on Friday night. RHP Terry Doyle (7-8, 3.56) makes his final regular season start against RHP Josh Ravin (2-0, 0.40). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the audio broadcast beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
