Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD - Frederick Keys outfielders Xavier Avery and Ronnie Welty have been named to the 2010 Carolina League Post-Season All-Star Team. Avery, who has been promoted to Double-A Bowie, and Welty are the 29th and 30th players in Keys history who have earned the honor.
Avery, 20, had a banner year at the top of the Keys lineup, batting .280 in 109 games with Frederick. When promoted to Double-A Bowie, Avery was second in the league in runs scored (73) and third in stolen bases (28). He was on pace to break a 17-year Keys record for hits in a season (Curtis Goodwin, 1993) when he was called up. Since heading to the Eastern League, Avery has stolen ten bases and driven home 17 runs in only 22 games with the Baysox.
Welty, 22, has now earned a post-season all-star nod in every season he has been a professional. Welty was a post-season all-star in the Appalachian League with Rookie Advanced Bluefield in 2008 and in the South Atlantic League with Class-A Delmarva in 2009. 2010 has seen Welty find his power stroke. He is in the top-5 in the Carolina League in home runs with 17 after hitting 13 in his first two professional seasons combined. He also has a career-high 77 RBI's which leads the Keys. One of three mid-season all-stars for Frederick, Welty has batted .279 in 125 Carolina League games with Frederick.
Prior to 2010, 17 of the 28 Frederick Keys to earn post-season all-star honors have gone on to become major league players. Past post-season all-stars include David Segui (1989), Alex Ochoa (1993), Jim Johnson (2005), Nick Markakis (2005), Nolan Reimold (2006), Jake Arrieta (2008) and Zach Britton (2009).
The Keys are headed to the Carolina League Playoffs and tickets are currently on-sale. Game One of the Northern Division Championship Series is set for Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. from Harry Grove Stadium. Tickets range from $8-11 and can be purchased by calling the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or by visiting online at frederickkeys.com.
