Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Woodbridge, VA - Three Winston-Salem pitchers combined to hold Potomac to two hits with 10 strikeouts as the Dash defeated the Nationals 2-1 on Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Winston-Salem (32-26) has won 10 of their last 11 games and reduced their magic number to clinch the first half title in the Southern Division to five games.
Dash starting pitcher Anthony Carter (5-3) allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts to garner the win. Carter exited the game with one out in the sixth inning and turned it over to reliever Hector Santiago, who retired five consecutive batters, including three strikeouts. Winston-Salem closer Henry Mabee worked the final two hitless innings and registered two strikeouts to collect his fifth save of the season.
The Dash scored both of their runs in the first inning against Potomac starting pitcher Jeff Mandel. Second baseman Dale Mollenhauer led off with an infield single and stole second base. A ground out moved the runner to third and then first baseman Jimmy Gallagher lined an RBI double to score Mollenhauer. Gallagher was picked off second base and on the first pitch afterward, designated hitter Lee Cruz blasted a solo home run to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead. The Nationals cut their deficit in half when Danny Espinosa registered an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.
Dash pitching would keep Potomac hitless over the final four innings as Winston-Salem improved to 16-7 in one-run contests and extended their lead to seven games over second-place Kinston. Mandel (6-3) limited the Dash to two runs on four hits in seven innings, but suffered the loss for the Nationals.
Following tonight's game, the Dash return to Wake Forest Baseball Park where they will welcome the Wilmington Blue Rocks for a three-game series beginning on Friday night. Winston-Salem will start RHP Jacob Rasner (1-0, 3.26) in the opener, while Wilmington is expected to turn to LHP Daniel Duffy (5-2, 2.66). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and it will also be Fireworks Friday, with a special fireworks show to commence following the game.
Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
