Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va- It was another quick contest at Pfitzner Stadium on Thursday night coming on the heels of yesterday's rain-shortened contest between the Dash and the P-Nats. Jeff Mandel and Anthony Carter were both on their game as runs were at a premium for both squads, but the Dash pushed two-first inning runs across and made them count to snatch victory from the Nats, 2-1. Jeff Mandel pitched brilliantly for seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out three, but his offense once again deserted their starter for the second consecutive night. Jimmy Gallagher lined an RBI double to right-center field to score Dale Mollenhauer and Lee Cruz followed with his third home run of the year, crushing a drive over the left-center field wall. Mandel (6-3) has not won since May 24 after scoring a victory in six consecutive starts.
The Nats bats were kept in check by Daniel Hudson last night, and could not muster much against a pitcher they have battered twice in 2009.
Anthony Carter entered the game against the P-Nats with an 0-2 record and a 13.50 ERA. In his last appearance against Potomac at Wake Forest Baseball Park on May 8, the Nats roughed up Carter to the tune of nine runs on 10 hits in just three innings in an eventual 12-4 Potomac victory. Thursday night, however, Carter was master of his domain.
For 5 1/3 innings, Carter (5-3) mixed up his pitches well to frustrate the Nats batters, allowing a paltry two hits and one run in his time on the hill. Though he walked four, this just made Carter "effectively wild" and held down the home team.
A Danny Espinosa third-inning sacrifice fly brought in the lone Nats run in the third inning to score Tim Pahuta, and Boomer Whiting stole his 22nd base of the season which is good for third in the Carolina League.
Carter was relieved by Hector Santiago who threw 1 2/3 flawless frames and Henry Mabee recorded his fifth save of the season by tossing the final two stanzas. All in all, the P-Nats struck out 10 times against Dash pitching who took two of three from the P-Nats.
Potomac has not won a series at Pfitzner Stadium since taking the first two games of an abbreviated three-game set with the Frederick Keys from May 1-3.
The team hits the road for a quick four-game series with the Frederick Keys starting with a doubleheader Friday with game one at 5 ET. You can hear all the action live on www.potomacnationals.com with Dan McGinn and Anthony Masterson starting with the pregame show at 4:45 ET.
