Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 24, 2010) - Today the Winston-Salem Dash announced several roster moves pertaining to its bullpen. LHP Santos Rodriguez (left arm) has been placed on the seven-day disabled list. The Dash receives RHP Ricky Brooks from AA Birmingham and RHP Brandon Kloess (rhymes with "hose") from low-A Kannapolis
This is Rodriguez' second trip to the D.L. this month. He spent eight days on the D.L. before being activated on Monday. The hard-throwing Dominican is 2-0 with a 3.57 ERA in 32 appearances this season with the Dash. He has struck out 59 batters in 40.1 innings and held the Carolina League to .193 opposing batting average.
Brooks returns to Winston-Salem for the fourth consecutive season. He spent all of 2008 in the Twin City and split parts of 2007 and 2009 with the Dash/Warthogs. In 70 games with Winston, he is 4-4 with a 3.25 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 116 innings. Brooks started the season with AA Birmingham, appearing in 15 games with one start. He was 0-3 with one save and a 5.40 ERA. Brooks was a third-round draft pick in 2005 out of East Carolina University. In his final season with the Pirates, he threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in Conference USA history.
Kloess is back with the Dash for the second time this season. He started the season in Kannapolis before pitching in one game for Winston-Salem on May 21. He pitched two scoreless innings and was sent back to the Intimidators shortly thereafter. Kloess was a South Atlantic League All-Star, posting a 1-1 record with nine saves and a 1.18 ERA. He struck out 47 batters and walked just nine in 38 innings. Kloess recently came off the disabled list (oblique) and last night made his first appearance since June 29.
Kloess was picked up by the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent last year. In his first professional season, he went 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 18 games (two starts) for Advanced Rookie-Level Great Falls. He struck out 72 batters in 58.2 innings and only gave up 49 hits. He finished the year third in the Pioneer League in strikeouts.
An alumnus of Florida Atlantic University, Kloess briefly played for the independent Windy City Thunderbolts (Frontier League) last summer before signing with Chicago. Windy City is the same indy team that both Dan Remenowsky and Kyle Shelton played for before signing with the White Sox.
Kloess was traded to Windy City from the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Continental League for a player to be named later. He signed with Texarkana after finishing his eligibility at FAU, but never played in a game for the Gunslingers. Kloess was 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA in three games (one start) for the Thunderbolts.
A five-year player at FAU (one redshirt season), Kloess' best season came in his sophomore year, when he went 8-2 with a 4.17 ERA. He posted an ERA over six in each of his three other college seasons.
In high school, Kloess was Alabama's 4A Player of the Year at St. James HS in 2001-02. He threw a perfect game in 2001, retiring all 21 batters he faced.
The Dash's roster has reached the Carolina League limit of 25 players.
Winston-Salem, fresh off back-to-back walk-off wins, plays game three of its series with Potomac tonight at 7 p.m.
